Good Book But Not The Best of Asian Saga
Revisado: 01-23-20
I am a huge Clavell fan and I enjoyed this book. However, I would it put it at the bottom of the Asian Saga along with Gai-Jin whereas Tai-Pan and Noble House are significantly better listens in my opinion. The ending (last couple of hours) felt a little rushed perhaps, which is a funny thing to say for a 53 hour long book. The narrator does a good job as well but again he is no Gildart Jackson or John Lee...

Historia
Ian Dunross, the current tai-pan of the illustrious yet financially troubled Struan empire, is racing to undo the damage his predecessor left behind and to once again stand on stable ground. And he’ll do whatever it takes—including striking a hard-fought deal with an American millionaire. But his rival, Quillan Gornt, has other plans. Suddenly caught in a dubious plot involving Soviet spies, Hong Kong’s criminal underground, and the hostile takeover of his company, Dunross holds nothing back in the fight for the Noble House.

One of Clavell's Finest
Revisado: 12-03-19
This book sits atop the Asian Saga ranking alongside with Tai-Pan. Dunross is a character almost at Dirk Struan's level of competence and charm. The difference between the Noble House and Tai-Pan is that the Noble House is incredibly action-packed. There are so many storylines happening at the same time and everything taking place in a week or so. The book also paints a great picture of Honk Kong in 1960s, concise descriptions of the locations and items of the era. Similar to Tai-Pan, the narration is excellent too. One might look at the 55 hour length of the audiobook and think that is too long but after finishing it, left me wanting for more...

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Simply Brilliant
Revisado: 06-04-19
Amazing novel, it truly has it all! Funny and witty (especially the dialogues between Cyril and Alice later in their lives), sad moments, parts that will make you very uncomfortable, very colorful and likable characters. If this story and characters can be done justice in a movie, that movie will be an Oscar machine. Narration is very good as well. I have almost 150 books in my Audible library and this novel is now in my top 5 listens, it is that good.

Historia
Few historians end up as historical actors in their own right, but Bernard Lewis has both witnessed and participated in some of the key events of the last century. When we think of the Middle East, we see it in terms that he defined and articulated. In this exceptional memoir he shares stories of his wartime service in London and Cairo, decrypting intercepts for MI6, with sometimes unexpected consequences. After the war, he was the first Western scholar ever invited into the Ottoman archives in Istanbul.

Easy and Fun Listen
Revisado: 03-27-19
It is not a history book but it is a memoir from a great historian. Lewis talks about his personal life and memories while mentioning some interesting notes from the 20th century. There are many funny and interesting anecdotes as well as encounters with some key figures of the century. As always Ralph Lister doesn't disappoint (big fan of him from James Clavell's Asian Saga).
As for the negative review before me, it is probably someone of Armenian descent hating Bernard Lewis for his views on the Armenian Genocide/Massacre issue. I'd say disregard the biased review and enjoy the book. It is an easy and fun listen.

Historia
Dirk Struan rose from humble beginnings to build Struan & Company, also known as the Noble House, into the world’s largest Far East trading company. He is now the Tai-Pan—Supreme Leader—of all Tai-Pans in China. Along the way, however, he made a powerful enemy. Tyler Brock, Struan’s rival from their early opium-smuggling days, also heads a large trading fleet, second in size only to Struan’s. But it is not only silks and spices that drive their mutual companies’ wealth—the opium trade is still booming.

Great Book, Fantastic Narration
Revisado: 08-29-18
Listened this book after Shogun and while Shogun was an interesting book, Tai-Pan is in a league of its own! Dirk Struan must be one of the greatest fictional characters ever created. And the narration by Gildart Jackson is second to none, he is now one of my all-time favorite narrators (along with John Lee). I love the book and the storyline so much that I downloaded the next book in the series, Gai-Jin.

Wasted my credit on this book, forced myself to listen for almost 5 hours but couldn't take it anymore. No interesting characters or exciting/curious story lines. Nothing groundbreaking on the science fiction side either.

Best Audiobook to Date
Revisado: 10-29-16
I have a long commute so I go through a lot of audiobooks. Pillars of the Earth is the best audiobook experience I have ever had. Amazing story, great characters, and one of the best narrating performances (as good as Jeremy Irons in the Alchemist) ever.
I envy those who haven't read/listened this book yet, ready to be blown away...
