The title insinuated something more soulful and perhaps more revealing in terms of internal processes of change; but I appreciated the linear connecting of the various stages of a woman’s life which allow the reader to either see what’s up ahead or review the journey if you’ve traversed the same stages as Isabel. The telling is generally free of angst.

Machado needs to be reread at different epochs of one’s life to lift yet another veil of reference, meaning, or connection.

Powerful, sometimes brutal in its revelations and insights into what is hard to see and acknowledge, but totally necessary. We can all find at least a piece of ourselves in the ills that come of the caste system but can we put it down and embrace the full humanity of every one and all?

Such an important message delivered in an almost poetic style, philosophical, spiritual, while stating painful truths about how our behavior has done so much damage to our Mother Earth. At the same time, Robin Wall Kimmerer offers a balanced perspective of “then and now” along with showing a path for recreating the way back to an attunement with nature in keeping with where we find ourselves today. I couldn’t stop listening to it and felt so connected to the writer.

The narrator’s timbre, phrasing and uneven reading pace are difficult to listen to. I would need to purchase the book.

The story recalled for me Samuel Clemens’ search for God and his conclusion that if we are created in his image what a sorry deity He is indeed (paraphrasing). Joseph exceeded most people’s image of a god conceived in the lowly reaches of fear and ignorance. The story’s twists of fate and willful endeavors of his brother to foist an image of a vengeful god on Joseph brought into sharp relief the one in tune and flow with life and nature and the other strapped to the limitations of narrow conventions hewn from that very fear of not daring to challenge them.

This painful series of historical dynamics of the US culture reveals much about our present political situation. Racism and classism is deeply and deliberately imbedded in our collective psyche to the advantage of the very few who truly rule the USA.

Would you try another book from Adam Mitzner and/or David LeDoux?

No. Too much overstatement of the obvious and too much unnecessary explanations which do not do justice to what could be a good story.

If you’ve listened to books by Adam Mitzner before, how does this one compare?

Have not

How could the performance have been better?

Less insinuation of the narrator's interpretation of mood and tone. A more professional narrator who stays out of the way of the story and the reader's imagination.

Was A Conflict of Interest worth the listening time?

Not really.

Any additional comments?

It's my first disappointment with a book from Audible.
