A decent primer for anyone who reads little, but those who are already avid readers will already be doing most of what he suggests. The helpful section was the one on annotation. The rest was so-so.

Historia
While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call. The elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum, a baffling cipher found near the body. As Langdon and gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, sort through the bizarre riddle, they are stunned to discover a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci, clues visible for all to see and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.

It's a good listen, but pretty poorly researched from a historical perspective. Taking this into account, however, Brown does a pretty nice job of weaving a tale of intrigue and suspense. Not literature, of course, but certainly worth the time to listen. The biggest problem in the plot are all of the assertions that are made as fact and are clearly opinion at best, or outright lies at worst. (For example, the desription of the Council of Nicea, certain claims made about the gnostic gospels, and other claims are lifted directly from "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", and would be clearly discounted by even the most generous historian.) That being considered, I would recommed giving this one a try.

Story is clever and fictional.

The book was an interesting listen and pretty entertaining. Those who are looking for literature - skip it. Those who are looking for history - skip it. But if you are looking for a pretty interesting listen and a clever (though recycled) plot, it might be what you're looking for. The lines between fiction and fact are very blurry, and Mr. Brown seems to prefer making assertions that are dubious (at best) about historical manuscripts, etc., but once again this is not intended (I hope) to be a historical treatise, but simply entertainment. Enjoy it and take it for what it is.
