Historia
At the beginning of 1864, the Civil War was far from won; terrible and bloody Union setbacks and casualties lay ahead. Abraham Lincoln was facing a re-election battle as some northern Democrats were ready to start peace talks that could leave the Confederacy a separate slaveholding American nation and as his secretary of the treasury, Salmon P. Chase, challenged him for the Republican nomination. But by the end of the year, the war's end was in sight, and slavery was on the verge of extinction.

I was thrilled by the intimate details I hadn't read or learned of before.
Revisado: 08-25-24
I am not the most read civil war follower or learner but I've read quite a lot ie; every Bruce Catton book...etc. and I loved every minute of this book. I haven't been kept awake by a book in a long time but I felt that excitement again. Even Yankee Plague didn't keep me up. I loved the intimate details and window into the personalities of civil war heroes and the others too! Just saying. Thank you for the gift of your book.

Historia
James M. McPherson, professor emeritus of U.S. history at Princeton, is one of the foremost scholars of the Civil War. In this informative and meticulously researched masterpiece, he clarifies the differing ways of life and philosophy that led to this shattering conflict. Abraham Lincoln wondered whether "in a free government the minority have the right to break up the government". And Jefferson Davis felt "forced to take up arms" to guarantee states' rights.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the series
Revisado: 06-19-19
I have never tired of learning more about the Civil War era. Reading has been my most favorite escape since childhood and the Civil War a favorite for long years. I am enthralled with reading about the people of that time in our country especially my favorite American U.S. Grant and President Lincoln. This book puts them both in a realist view. For me the real story is always better than just the outline, which I was given about George Washington, and the people are best seen with all their faults and amazing gifts. The better to appreciate them and honor their service.

Revisado: 04-10-17
Dr. Allender writes such hard to hear words yet my soul is years of counseling and group work behind me. But even after confronting and forgiving my dad I still had serious problem with the "grievace self-contempt he writes about in the book. I didn't know it and in my earlier work on this the words didn't man what they meant to me this year when I was searching for a place to put the road burn I had hurt myself with. Now I am signed up and walking through the memories again. staying with it. I have many yearr

Historia
The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 2 continues one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. Focusing on the pivotal year of 1863, the second volume in Shelby Foote's masterful narrative history brings to life some of the most dramatic and important moments in the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg and Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. The word narrative is the key to this book's extraordinary incandescence and truth: The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved.

Revisado: 02-16-17
I loved Shelby Foote from the moment I saw him on Ken Burns Civil War. Now my appreciation for him grows. I had read Bruce Catton's books on the Civil War and really loved them. Shelby Foote writes a beautiful narrative that expands our of it. I loved the account of U. S. Grant's two day excursion up the Mississippi on a bender. It was hilarious and I am so happy he had officers and friends like the journalist who did his best to corral him and then keep their mouths shut for so many years. What loyalty! A quality hard to find today.

A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

What an awakening of learning I have had
Revisado: 12-20-16
I have always loved the civil war period and have visited some of the battlefields but I had no idea how great a person General Grant is. I would that everyone especially at this perilous time would read this book. I am going to make his memoirs a must read for myself. I learned so much that it is difficult to put in words.

Jean Edward Smith's Bush is a biography of George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States. Bush was a talented politician with a sincere commitment to domestic policy issues such as education and Medicare expansion. However, his decision to go to war with Iraq in 2003 was disastrous. It undermined his presidency and his legacy.

A fellow believer leads America into the worst war
Revisado: 09-11-16
I can't read President Bush's heart but it is most definitely troubling that a believer in Christ would lie and torture his way into believing himself a tool of God. Hubris as the author said is a good description of that horror. A particularly disgusting revelation was what he did regarding North Korea. I just can't understand that logic and I also still must say my heart would like an explanation by Mr. Bush himself though I can see why that would put him at risk. I t should. War profiteering is the same as manslaughter but people just give him a pass for Iraq. I don't I was a republican until then, not very politically aware until then but I was a voracious reader and history one of my favorite subjects. I pray the Blood of Christ over Mr. Bush and family.

An awesome insight to our first President
Revisado: 08-03-16
I am absolutely loving this book. I hope American schools will improve our history lessons taught to our kids. I fell in love with George Washington in my school years but I wish I had studied him deeper before my very short trip back east to see Mount Vernon. He was so much more than I thought. Revealing his human nature doesn't detract from his memory but only makes him more real. I have had to take breaks from the history when confronted with the terribleness of our current Presidential campaign. I only hope to meet my American heroes by the side of the River of Life.
