Historia
When We Walk By takes an urgent look at homelessness in America, showing us what we lose—in ourselves and as a society—when we choose to walk past and ignore our neighbors in shelters, insecure housing, or on the streets. And it brilliantly shows what we stand to gain when we embrace our humanity and move toward evidence-based people-first, community-driven solutions, offering social analysis, economic and political histories, and the real stories of unhoused people.

Homelessness is complicated. This book helps to outline the causes, demystify the stereotypes, and suggest steps to be part of the solution.

Historia
In this spirited account, Billie Jean King details her life's journey to find her true self. She recounts her groundbreaking tennis career - six years as the top-ranked woman in the world, 20 Wimbledon championships, 39 grand-slam titles, and her watershed defeat of Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes". She poignantly recalls the cultural backdrop of those years and the profound impact on her worldview from the women's movement, the assassinations and anti-war protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, eventually, the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Inspiring

I remember hearing about BJK as I was growing up, seeing her on a Wheaties cereal box, but did not know how much of a champion for equity she has been. Listening to her inspires me to be a better human.

Truth is one - there are many paths explained here.
Revisado: 08-15-21
I like how this book from JK shares what happened to him along his early journey with his dharma teachers. The best gem for me was the reminder that there are multiple paths with multiple teachers, some of them conflicting - and that is ok. I recommend this book.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Enlightening and Entertaining
Revisado: 02-19-21
Trevor Noah takes tough concepts (Apartheid, religion, poverty, racism, domestic abuse), reduces them to their basic motivations in people, then weaves a story, his story, around them.

Historia
The construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning reveals the history of racist ideas in America, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.

Necessary read to view the state of things
Revisado: 11-06-20
This book is a great beginning historical look to the “tree of racism,” as Reynolds calls it. Please white people, read this book to become aware of the systems that have been put in place so that they can be dismantled.
