Historia
In 2006, Kristi Coulter left her cozy but dull job for a promising new position at the fast-growing Amazon.com, but she never expected the soul-crushing pressure that would come with it. In no time she found the challenge and excitement she'd been craving—along with seven-day workweeks, lifeboat exercises, widespread burnout, and a culture driven largely by fear. But the chase, the visibility, and, let's face it, the stock options proved intoxicating, and so, for twelve years, she stayed—until she no longer recognized the face in the mirror or the mission she'd signed up for.

Touted as a book about women in tech, but ....
Revisado: 09-14-23
Coulter does talk a lot about the experience of a woman working in tech, but this book is about so much more. Also, the futility of the struggle that is corporate work. Also becoming a good German, and following orders. How mediocre managers ruin lives managing everything but people. Well worth the time.

Blackbriar Academy is an enchanted school on a magical island, and everyone wants in. It’s a home away from home for the most advanced mages in the world - and only the absolute best of the best are given an invitation. By some freak accident, I managed to get one. If I pass the trials, I get to stay. With nowhere else to go, Blackbriar is my one shot at having a real life, and I won’t let anyone take this from me. But there’s a catch. It turns out the people on this island are being trained to hunt the darkness - basically, they’re being trained to hunt me.

Revisado: 07-08-23
I listened to this "for free" with my Plus Catalog membership. Had I been reading it, I'm not sure that I'd have finished. But, it was good enough for free.
It's a very tropey wizards academy fantasy with a female MC written in first-person from the MC's POV. So, at least it's not rotating first-person. There isn't much explicit "romance" until quite near the end, and it's unremarkable. The world-building is thin/weak. The MC is not particularly believable. All character dialog, including the MC's inner dialog, is in Gen-Z vernacular. Place names are from modern North America, but that's left unexplained. Altogether, it has a strong fan-fic vibe. Might appeal to a very young female reader who wants a self-insert MC.

Not bad, but not really good either
Revisado: 02-28-23
Seemed as though this might be a fun break from some heavier and more serious stuff that I'd been reading. But, it turned out to be fairly tedious. Had I been reading rather than listening, I doubt I would have finished.

Not a bad book, but not a good book.
Revisado: 08-14-22
This sort of book has become increasingly common in litRPG. The writing is pretty good, and the story checks most of the boxes, but there just isn't much else to say about it.
It's strength is probably the RTS/town-builder mechanics. The world building and magic system are just adequate. Action scenes are not particularly dramatic or interesting. The harem element is entirely superficial. while the explicit scenes are juvenile. That said, they are also independent of the plot. They could be easily skipped.

Great story dragged down by voice acting performan
Revisado: 08-01-22
As many reviews have already noted, the voice acting / narration of the audio book is terrible. The French accented passages became more intelligible with exposure, making them more tolerable towards the end. The American accented narration wasn't great, but it seemed better by contrast to the French.
In the end, the story made it worth it. However, should you have the option to read rather than listen, reading is the way to go.
The story evoked for me the spirit of books like John Fowles, The Magus, but with a heaping helping of magical HEA.

I was tantalized by the mystery of her. The leech inside me came out to find prey, but found none in this enigmatic girl. The close proximity of her essence didn’t entice the monster within, so what did that make her? I had more questions than answers, but one thing was unmistakable; although she released me from her embrace, her hold on me remained.

A different perspective with mild spoilers
Revisado: 07-02-22
I think it's safe to say that I am not the target demographic for this series, but it appeared in a search for Audible Plus catalog fantasy. For zero marginal costs, why not.
As it turns out, it's more romance than fantasy. There isn't much world building or any elaborate system for the light super natural elements. But, while I'm not much of a romance reader, I'm familiar with the basics elements. Oddly, most of what I would think of as those basics elements are eliminated by the "agape"/fated-mates fantasy elements. So, there is no follow your head vs your heart conflict. The romantic protagonists were just born in love a that's it. No conflicts to be resolved, no breakups and HEA reunion resolution.
Also, the vampires do little if any spooky cool supernatural scary vampire stuff. There is some very mild erotica in the third book, but I don't think this series will do it for sexy vampire fans. In fact, it's very trad-con weddings and babies. The third book reaches the resolution of its main dramatic arc, and then goes on for several chapters to describe in great detail a pregnancy and birth, only to tack on the setup for the (presumably) next book.
So, I'm clearly not the target reader demographic, but I'm fascinated to find that there is, apparently, an audience seeking tales of pure, virginal young women finding chaste love with soy boy vampires uninhibited by any internal conflict. And, I suppose, you know who you are.

Finished the first two books and plan to continue
Revisado: 05-10-20
Update: I finished the 3rd book in the series, and I've now given up. Rather than getting better, the whole thing gets worse. Will try to avoid other titles by this author and the voice acting team.
Can't say that this is a great series so far, but the story line is interesting. Try the sample narration if you are considering the audio book. I find it a little to fast, and prefer to listen at 75%. Can't say whether it's the writing or the voice acting, but it seems overly dramatic most of the time. Plenty of long expositional monologues delivered like speeches. The cover art emphasizes the supposedly erotic aspects, but they are thankfully few in these early books. Some of the cringiest I've encountered.

Pretty good story, will continue the series
Revisado: 05-10-20
i enjoy the story more than the writing overall. Seems as if the characters mostly give speeches to one another, rather than engaging in dialogue. Despite the cover art, the "erotic" passages are few, if cringy. Found that listening at 75% speed works OK with these performers.
