Historia
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

Impactful and Haunting
Revisado: 11-30-24
I have always been interested in and admired Navalny and his family. He told us his story beautifully here and with great detail, seriousness and humor. It’s haunting because we know how his life ends. Thank u Yulia for getting his story out and for all your strength and sacrifice.

Historia
Wright Thompson’s family farm in Mississippi is 23 miles from the site of one of the most notorious and consequential killings in American history, yet he had to leave the state for college before he learned the first thing about it. To this day, fundamental truths about the crime are widely unknown, including where it took place and how many people were involved. This is no accident: the cover-up began at once, and it is ongoing.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

This is a well done narrative of a long complicated story. I only knew a superficial version of The Troubles before listening to this. Now I feel I have heard from the various sides and how individually people were hurt and so
Many lives ruined. Well done. I highly recommend if u want to understand Northern Ireland.

Historia
We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

As always, Applebaum brings real content to back up this story of authoritarianism and greed and misery in our world. The fact that it’s all connected is not surprising but shocking to understand it better. She offers solutions at the end that our government and voters should take seriously.

Loved this story “explaining” Agatha’s absence and the stunning true narrative of how unwed mothers were treated in past times. Very interesting plot and characters and settings. Did not see the wrap up coming ;-) Now I’m going to read an Agatha Christie novel !

Historia
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

Great story potential… could not finish
Revisado: 12-11-22
I thought I’d learn a lot about a period and place I did not know much about ,, the female reporter in NYC was the most interesting. The 2 Cuban lead characters had so much potential but just torture to grind thru their stories and the narrator was ill suited for this. I had high hopes and could not finish this book
