My first Courtney but certainly won't be my last
Revisado: 03-13-13
A story of hardship and struggle and how a young boy navigates through it with the help of a very special mentor.
I bought this audiobook based on the reviews and knowing nothing of the author. I am not a fan of boxing so I was surprised at how entirely this book drew me in. It was engaging and uplifting... just what I love in a book.
The narrator did a great job.

Slow-moving
Revisado: 03-13-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would not. To be honest, I only got through the first half. The characters did not draw me in emotionally. Iris's lover was distanced and lacked warmth, so that the affair did not really seem that genuine to me. The story dragged. I am not one to give up early on a book but after the first half I asked myself "do I care what happens to these characters?" The answer was "no."
What aspect of Rula Lenska’s performance would you have changed?
Her voice was good for the character of Iris, the grandmother. But it didn't fit with Ruby's character-it sounded too old and scratchy. And the way she did male voices (especially those of Egyptian characters) got on my nerves... Bad accents and somehow the men came off sounding simple-minded.
Was Iris and Ruby worth the listening time?
Not for me.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Frustratingly fast narration
Revisado: 07-01-10
I read this book and loved it, so I thought I'd refresh my memory by downloading the audiobook. I couldn't make it through the second chapter. The narration is frustratingly fast, leaving no time to digest in between sentences. I kept wanting the narrator to just pause for a half second between sentences, because the writing was sometimes very rich, complex and descriptive, and I had no time to form a picture in my mind of what was described.
Do yourself a big favor and read the text version of this book... it is really worth it!

Great narration to an enthralling story
Revisado: 07-01-10
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, although the story could be quite dark at times. The descriptions of Melrose Island and the town and people of Colleton were so vivid, I felt like I knew them myself.
The narrator, Frank Muller, did a great job, reading at the perfect pace for me. I was sorry when it was over!
