Historia
In 1969, two sisters from rural Việt Nam leave their parents’ home and travel to the bustling city of Sài Gòn. Soon their lives are swept up in the unstoppable flames of a war that is blazing through their country. They begin working as ‘bar girls’ in one of the drinking dens frequented by American GIs, forced to accept that survival now might mean compromising the values they once treasured. Decades later, two men wander through the streets and marketplaces of a very different Sài Gòn.

What an incredible book. A must listen for sure!

Absolutely amazing book. The writing is beautiful, the characters rich and compelling. So much tragedy and pain, and hope as well. The narrator is just incredible... she brings it all to life, especially the parts in Vietnamese. I was completely gripped. Each storyline is richly fleshed out, and tugs at your heart strings. These important stories need to be told over and over again. This will stay with me a long time 💜

Historia
Long overshadowed by Japan and China, South Korea is a small country that happens to be one of the great national success stories of the postwar period. From a failed state with no democratic tradition, ruined and partitioned by war, and sapped by a half-century of colonial rule, South Korea transformed itself in just 50 years into an economic powerhouse and a democracy that serves as a model for other countries. With no natural resources and a tradition of authoritarian rule, Korea managed to accomplish a second Asian miracle.

Let down by narrative style and rather out of date
Revisado: 02-16-23
I'd had the ebook for a while and never got around to reading it. I have to say I was disappointed. The style of narration felt condescending (even though I'm sure he didn't mean it to be). Very old fashioned, as if observing Korea as quaint and unsophisticated. It didn't help that the pronunciation of Korean words/names etc was so bad. Audiobook producers take note - provide pronunciation guides for your narrators!
Not all the information is bad and it might be a good starting point for those who are interested, but I think there are many newer books from a more modern perspective. When this book was written (2012) kdramas/movies, kpop, and kbeauty hadn't yet exploded worldwide, and it was probably hard to imagine quite how huge and influential they would become.
I hope more works like this, but written by Korean authors, will be translated for overseas audiences. There are some fantastic Korean American narrators who would do a great job.
