Historia
Philip Carey, a sensitive orphan born with a clubfoot, finds himself in desperate need of passion and inspiration. He abandons his studies to travel, first to Heidelberg and then to Paris, where he nurses ambitions of becoming a great artist. Philip's youthful idealism erodes, however, as he comes face-to-face with his own mediocrity and lack of impact on the world. After returning to London to study medicine, he becomes wildly infatuated with Mildred, a vulgar, tawdry waitress, and begins a doomed love affair.

Fantastic narration of a fantastic masterpiece of realism

The humane character of the protagonist (with all his contradictions and struggles) along with the incredible array of lively characters encountered. Really great writing, brought to life by brilliant voice performance.

Light, charming and entertaining fun
Revisado: 01-20-25
Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. A new genre for this listener. Recommend, but don’t expect great literature. It has a lot of wonderful corny humor, but also some surprising great insights into the difficulties of getting to know one another and risking commitment.
One critical comment: the narration was uneven. Mostly good, but the male voice of the lead was painfully gritty and I found it hard to listen to.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Historia

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

I most loved his story of growing up in the 50’s and finding/stumbling his way into what he was called to do. The warmth and frankness of the descriptions are something special. Oh, and one more thing: he can be be funny.

Prior to the U.S. entering WWII, a small coterie of British spies in Washington, D.C., was formed. They called themselves the Baker Street Irregulars after the band of street urchins who were the eyes and ears of Sherlock Holmes in some Arthur Conan Doyle stories.

Fascinating but Needs Focus - Would Benefit From a Rewrite

As a fan a Dahl, and also of the history of modern intelligence, I was fascinated by this Engaging and well-told background stories tie together (too loosely, perhaps) Dahl’s life and that of Britain’s espionage organization. Also very well narrated. But I can’t help wishing it was packaged differently: my suggestion would be to bring it to life more- maybe use different readers to use Dahl’s voice more when reading quotes from his letters- maybe other voices for other key figures like Marsh / Wallace / the Roosevelts etc. ?
Great overall.

Historia
Herman Melville’s tale of corporate discontent, Bartleby, the Scrivener, tells the story of a quiet, hardworking legal copyist who works in an office in the Wall Street area of New York City. The business where he works handles the official financial paperwork of wealthy men. One day, Bartleby’s employer requests he proofread one of the documents he has copied. Bartleby declines the assignment with the inscrutable “I would prefer not,” the first of what will become many refusals.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Fantastic reading of a heartbreaking and powerful story
Revisado: 06-26-23
Really moving, disturbing, and inspiring. It feels like the superb narrator understood the different people and characters beyond just the words- I never was able to get through this book as a young person but now, on audio I really feel like I know it.
It’s such an important piece of history and the way Steinbeck brings it to life is something you just have to experience to appreciate. Thank you.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Thought provoking, mind bending entertainment with a great element of suspense: lively dialogue between the two main characters is witty, fun, even about a very dark “what-if…” scenario. Also a masterful performance by a great narrator.

Amazing story, great narration on .9x
Revisado: 05-09-23
A really far reaching idea/metaphor- mind-bending, and way ahead of its time. For sure required two listens to make sense! Narration is excellent, but takes some getting used to: as others have mentioned, some of the voices are cartoonishly over-done, which is actually quite in character, but is a bit grating at first- stick with it as it gets better/falls into place. Also, I found it easier to listen to slowed down a little, like around -.9x speed.
