Good book. Bad choice in narrators.
Revisado: 10-15-24
Were this a book review, I would give it 4 stars. As an audible the narrator took so much away from the enjoyment of it I couldn’t go there. She managed to make the character Joyce’s whispering so nails on the chalk board annoying it affected my view of her. I cringed at every one of the Joyce chapters, and found her extremely unlikeable as a result. I listened to the first two books and had no problem with that narrator. As I couldn’t return this audible book, I hung in there, because I do like the premise of the series. I was able to return the next book and will be reading it instead. One wonders if the author’s choice to continue using such a poor choice in narrators is a case of the emperor’s new clothes. I am unfamiliar with the actress, but thought she might be so well known in England that one is embarrassed to admit his error and find someone else. Some perfectly good actors make really poor narrators. That is certainly the case with this.

Historia
New York City, 1911. Edith Wharton, almost equally famed for her novels and her sharp tongue, is bone-tired of Manhattan. Finding herself at a crossroads with both her marriage and her writing, she makes the decision to leave America, her publisher, and her loveless marriage. And then, dashing novelist David Graham Phillips—a writer with often notorious ideas about society and women’s place in it—is shot to death outside the Princeton Club. Edith herself met the man only once, when the two formed a mutual distaste over tea in the Palm Court of the Belmont hotel.

Nails on a chalkboard narrator
Revisado: 07-09-24
The hissing of the narrators “ssss” sounds and audible breathing at the end of every sentence made it hard to focus on what turned out to be a mundane plot anyway.

Acclaimed best-selling novelist Kunihiko Hidaka is found brutally murdered in his home on the night before he’s planning to leave Japan and relocate to Vancouver. His body is found in his office, a locked room, within his locked house, by his wife and his best friend, both of whom have rock solid alibis. Or so it seems.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

I thought I could make it to the end, but.....
Revisado: 11-06-23
This book is as muddy a mess as the tracks on which Lexington raced. The multiple narrators were ridiculous. The characters sometimes spoke in their own voices and at other times in another. A very poor take on the accents. When you actually cringe while listening, you know there is a problem.
Romance novel, political treatise, historical fiction... what was it?
I hung in there because I wanted to know about the horse. Finally, I realized there is plenty out there I can read on Lexington without having to endure the torture. So, I hit the “marked as finished” button and sighed in relief.

Clueless characters! Predictable plot! Raunchy!
Revisado: 06-19-23
It's hard to tell where Ken Follet's head was in writing this book. Maybe he was testing his ability to write porn. May be he was testing his readers tolerance for unbelievably clueless characters, created only for the sake of manipulating his plot in a highly predictable direction. It was one of those reads that you finally throw your hands up and say, I can't waste another minute on this!

A Waste of Time
Revisado: 08-06-20
I enjoyed a few other Horowitz books, but the twist in this one was a huge frustration. I had an inkling early on of the twist, but dismissed it as being far too contrived. I’m not likely to purchase any more of his works, because I’m not a fan of unreliable narrators and can’t trust that he won’t use the devise again. And yes I know the narrator spent the last of the book explaining himself, but at that point I was not interested enough to finish it.
