Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Rich, powerful storytelling
Revisado: 02-05-24
Abraham Verghese does it again with an epic, multigenerational tale, weaving his cultural history and passion for medical drama into an unforgettable story. Having said that, certain scenes are not for the faint of heart, but even tragedy is described with beautiful compassion.

Historia
A “conspiracy of improbabilities” was how Deepak Chopra described the tragic events that took the life of Joshua Rothstein in 2002 when he was struck by a car at just fifteen-and-a-half years old. That conspiracy would thrust Nancy, her husband, and their two daughters into a profound state of grief sparked by Josh’s sudden death. Yet with pure grace, the wall of death was shattered for Nancy, and she stepped back into life.

Love endures
Revisado: 03-15-23
The Rothstein family suffered an unimaginable loss, and this book is the story of their survival in the aftermath. While the book is primarily about Nancy and Josh (mother and son), the lessons are universal, especially Josh’s gift from Beyond. This book will stick with me for a very long time.

Historia
Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, 14 times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.

Unforgettable
Revisado: 11-16-22
There are hardly words for Brandi’s story told in her voice, with the bonus of ending each chapter with just her and a guitar or piano singing the songs discussed within each chapter. I have listened to this book three times, and each is more powerful than the last. Treat yourself to an unforgettable experience.

Historia
Charlie and Margaret Marder, political stars in 1960s Washington DC, know all too well how the tangled web of power in the nation's capital can operate. Attorney General Robert Kennedy needs them to look into a potential threat not only to the presidency but to the security of the United States itself. Charlie and Margaret quickly find themselves on a flight to sunny Los Angeles, where they’ll face off against a dazzling world of stars and studios. At the center of their investigation is Frank Sinatra, a close friend of President John F. Kennedy and a rumored mob crony.

Odd subject choice
Revisado: 06-20-21
I may be biased by the fact that I never would have listened to this book if it weren’t my book club’s choice. Having said that, the book just feels so dated. I don’t mean that the events happen in the 1960s, I mean I feel like we’re a solid generation or two past when a book highlighting the Rat Pack and the intertwining of the CIA, the Mob, and Hollywood should be written. Also, the author is a well-respected, serious journalist, and he has written a novel linking Hollywood and other powerful elites to the abuse of underage girls. In a world in which conspiracy theorists are itching for “evidence” of such malfeasance, I can see how this book would be used as proof, even though the central events in it are fictional.
