Everyone should listen to chapter 4…

Excellent series. Highly recommend. Informative, compelling and heart-breaking. Helps us understand how we’ve gotten to where we are now: Brexit, Trump, disinformation.

Historia
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with a urgent cry for help. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly dug open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Meanwhile the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death.

I wasn’t familiar with this story. Impressively intricate plot. Also, surprisingly tender and romantic at times. Highly recommend.

Historia
Andrew Thale is not exactly thrilled when his overbearing father sends him on an errand to assess the property inherited from an eccentric aunt. Andrew is intrigued though, when he finds the house fully occupied. Its odd and interesting residents have a calming effect on him, especially the beautiful young woman named Tarragon. But his arrival seems to have set a series of mysterious events into motion. Narrator John McDonough’s engaging performance lets you share in the excitement and camaraderie.

Wonderful, uplifting story from a gifted story-teller
Revisado: 08-15-24
I’ve recently discovered Dorothy Gilman, initially with her Mrs. Polifax series. Really enjoy her writing: the characters, original story-lines, thoughtful reflections and interesting facts about history, science, culture, etc that she mixes in.

Historia
Georgie, or Lady Georgiana Rannoch, is busy planning her upcoming nuptials to Darcy O'Mara. Unfortunately, what has started as a simple wedding has become quite a royal headache and grand affair, thanks to a guest list that includes the queen and the appointment of princesses as Georgie's bridesmaids. “If only Darcy and I had eloped!” she thinks, as she attempts to organize her wedding and find a place for her and her husband-to-be to live. Just as she despairs of ever finding a home, her godfather offers his fully staffed country estate. But something sinister is afoot....

Sadly, leaving this series after Book 12…
Revisado: 05-23-24
After thoroughly enjoying the first eleven books in this series, I was surprised and disappointed by the changes in the following books. I had been so impressed with the author’s prolific story-telling, the compelling and like-able characters she created, the historical insights and references, interspersed with warm humor, not to mention the masterful narration by Katherine Kellgren.
Oddly, in Book 12, not only did the narrator change, but so did the essence of the main character, Georgie. Gone was the warm and open person who treated people of all backgrounds with equal respect. I was very surprised by this change in tone from the author. It’s almost as if the previous narrator had imbued the characters with something of herself that is now gone.
I tried to listen to Books 13 and 14, but it was no different. Thank you Rhys and Katherine for the wonderful first 11 books!

Historia
New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman joins Anthony to discuss her recent book, “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America” which chronicles his life and its true meaning from his rise in New York City, to his shrunken post-presidency. Haberman has been covering the world of Donald Trump since her days as a metro reporter in the late 1990s and explains how his “playbook” has not changed since he entered politics. Trump has said Maggie is like his “psychiatrist,” and Anthony confirms she got under the former President’s skin more than any other ...

Great interview!
Revisado: 03-22-24
I didn’t know anything about Anthony Scaramucci aside from his brief, kind-of -humiliating, stint as Trump’s spokesperson. I’ve recently scene him on a few shows and have been very impressed with his intellect, thoughtfulness and point of view, especially regarding Trump and the dangers he poses. I wanted to hear more from him, so I decided to see if he had a podcast. Happily, I found this!

Will Republicans ever back a decent leader again - like this one? / FROM THE ARCHIVE

Historia
As we publish this, Congressional Republicans have just elected their new Speaker - a right-wing extremist who led the fight, which many consider seditious, to overthrow Joseph Biden’s 2020 democratic election. So it’s more astonishing than ever to revisit the presidency of Republican Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower. His granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower, describes some of Ike's visionary and controversial policies - which many if not most Republicans would likely oppose today.

Excellent interview with Eisenhower’s granddaughter
Revisado: 11-10-23
Every U. S. citizen should listen to this. So interesting and important to learn about Eisenhower’s guiding principles and strategies post-WWII and during the Cold War. I didn’t know that he had warned against spending too much on Defense at the expense of a healthy economy and society (dollars taken away from roads, schools, housing, infrastructure, etc.) and that no taxes should be cut until the budget is balanced. Very glad I listened to this.

In 1994, more than 300 Republicans under the command of obstructionist and rabble-rouser Congressman Newt Gingrich stood outside the U.S. Capitol to sign the Contract with America and put bipartisanship on notice. Twenty-five years later, on January 6, 2021, a bloodthirsty mob incited by President Trump invaded the Capitol.

Important chronicle
Revisado: 02-18-23
I came of age in the 1980s, so I both witnessed and experienced the events chronicled in this book. I’m glad to see it all documented in one place like this, so that we don’t forget, and will hopefully learn from it. For example, I did not know that Bret Kavanaugh was involved in the Bill Clinton “investigations” (a true “witch hunt”). And now he’s a Supreme Court Justice. Ouch.
Even at a young age, I sensed and felt repelled by the hostile and manipulative rhetoric coming from the GOP and from Fox “News” pundits (I am an active voter, but not registered with any party). What deeply concerns and perplexes me is how many people have bought into it. If I can see the hypocrisy and manipulation, why can’t everyone?
