Historia
When Tess Durbeyfield is driven by family poverty to claim kinship with the wealthy D'Urbervilles and to seek a portion of their family fortune, meeting her cousin Alec proves to be her downfall. A very different man, Angel Clare, seems to offer her love and salvation, but Tess must choose whether to reveal her past or remain silent in the hope of a peaceful future. Thomas Hardy’s timeless masterpiece is brought to life in this new recording by Anne-Marie Duff (Shameless, His Dark Materials).

Anne-Marie Duff Makes This the Best Edition
Revisado: 03-13-25
Really a classic, modernist delayed gratification, romance, suffering, heartache, subversion of period norms and tastes etc..
But, man: this is--at the very least--a top five all time reading.
Anne-Marie Duff narrated the prose perfectly, and her performance extracted pathos from every little detail of every single character.

Historia
Few years can justly be said to have transformed the earth: 1914 did. In July that year, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Britain and France were poised to plunge the world into a war that would kill or wound 37 million people, tear down the fabric of society, uproot ancient political systems and set the course for the bloodiest century in human history.

Unlimited simulacreage to colonize
Revisado: 04-25-24
If you liked "The Sleepwalkers" or "The Guns of August," then...read them again?
"1914" cites both explicitly, in a text lacking any of the features that made those books interesting to read or discuss.
(Meldrum is an excellent narrator, but struggles terribly with foreign words. Bless him, he tried.)

Historia
Ged, the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea, was called Sparrowhawk in his reckless youth. Hungry for power and knowledge, Sparrowhawk tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.

Quality voice acting.
Revisado: 11-01-19
He sounds like a little much at first it I was impressed by the subtle transformation of his character voice for Ged: from sullen and sulky teen to brooding young lad to stoic reserved man grown. This subtlety works with rather than against the dramatic storybook narration of the tale. Good good reading of good good book. I await the next in the series.
