Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Wow from a new Andy Weir & Ray Porter fan
Revisado: 10-31-21
If this is a representative example, I can’t believe I never read this author before. I absolutely loved this book. There was a ton of science & math for the geek in me, but the story was so approachable and well written. I couldn’t put it down and am finding another book by the author as soon as I write this…hopefully also with the same narrator. The narrator was equally amazing and I felt more like i knew the characters and was part of the story because of his performance.

Boring disappointment
Revisado: 12-29-17
I suffered through over 6.5 hours of this book before I got completely annoyed and gave up. The only saving grace was the narrator’s performance and he deserves extra props for staying awake during this weakly plotted book. He did an excellent job and is the only reason I stuck it out for so long.
The vast majority of the first 6.5 hours was spent on different factions chasing, torturing & killing each other. The only character I cared at all about was “The Beast”, which I guess was good since so many characters were killed soon after they were introduced anyway. I guess that’s one way to avoid character development...
In all that time the only thing other than chasing, torture & murder was a brief and yawn inducing glimpse of the artifact and equally boring mentions of what is being created by the artifact with no interesting detail or background.
I was hoping for some really cool insights into the artifact, where it came from & some interesting scientific detail on what it does & why, but was sorely disappointed. IMHO the book would have been much better if that was the focus with factions/chasing used as an occasional break of action.
It may be that Part 3 gets better, but it’s unacceptable to make us suffer through almost 7 hours of boredom before things get good!

couldn't get past the horrible narration
Revisado: 07-03-15
I hesitate to criticize narration as a general rule because I think it's much harder than writing the book, but I have to warn everyone out there about this one. The Amazon reviews were good so it sounds like reading the book is the way to go on this one. I only gave the story 2 stars because I couldn't stand to listen beyond the first 90 minutes so I really couldn't say if the story was good or not.
The narrator tried so hard to focus on voices/accents that she forgot the basics like consistent volume and clearly articulating the words. Some voices were SO LOUD that I had to turn the sound down. Then the next voice was so quiet and mumbled that I had to turn the sound back up. This happened so often that I got frustrated at the need to constantly adjust the volume and I couldn't even follow the story. The worst part though was Sue Jan's voice. It was extreme and awful - high pitched, VERY loud, whiny and horribly screechy. It literally hurt my ears, which was a problem since she's one of the main characters.
I strongly suggest you skip this one in audio. The narrator for the first book was fine so hopefully they went back to her after this book...haven't checked that yet.

Predictable story - weak, pathetic romance
Revisado: 12-28-13
I never expected great literature. I was just hoping for a fun escape, but sadly this book was a wasted credit. The love story might be romantic to an inexperienced 13 year old and the story might be interesting if you'd never read any of the many good paranormal books.
Initially I thought the book might be decent, but it quickly became completely predictable. Technically the plot had some unique ideas, but the way it all played out was weak at best. I'm typically not great at guessing who the bad girl/guy is, but this book was so cliched that I knew who the villain was even before the author fully explained what the villain was doing. The villain was so obvious that I wouldn't normally believe it, but based on the predictability of the overall story I shouldn't have bothered looking for another option.
The author really tried to inject some humorous scenes, but I was so annoyed with the stupidity of the story that even the humor fell flat.
There was more "romance" than plot, but it was so pathetic that what were meant to be touching love scenes made me alternately roll my eyes and cringe. Both a werewolf and a vampire wanted the least likely and least experienced girl (of course!). The girl was supposed to have been strong enough to hold her sisters together during tough times, yet as soon as a man paid attention to her she became a whiney, insecure wimp.
Sadly, this was the tone for all the romance...weak girls desperate for attention from a big, strong man. These were supposed to be women with cool powers, but as soon as a man showed up they showed little backbone or strength. There was one scene where the men had just run out to hunt dangerous, infected vampires and they texted/called the girls to let them know what they were doing. I was surprised the men would stop what they were doing to contact the girls since they'd just left the girls and were in extreme danger, but the girls response was to sit at home whining about whether the men loved them because the calls/texts weren't romantic enough.
That was just one of many really stupid scenes that were supposed to be sweet and romantic. If that sounds romantic to you then ignore this review and enjoy the book. Otherwise I suggest you find a better book, of which there are many.
