Historia
Everybody loves Ian Ludlow’s action novels—especially the CIA—because the spies know something the public doesn’t: His fictional plots have a frightening tendency to come true. Ian is in Hong Kong with his resourceful assistant Margo French to research his wildest story yet—a deadly global conspiracy by Chinese intelligence to topple the United States. What Ian doesn’t know is that his horrifying scenario is happening and that the Chinese mistakenly believe he’s an undercover superspy assigned to foil their scheme.

It's Mar-SAY, not Mar-SIGH!!!
Revisado: 03-17-25
Lee Goldberg delivers as always with a fast paced, action packed tale, including fun characters, interesting setting and witty dialogue. The narration was dreadful. Adam Verner's style, with oddly drawn out cadence and weird inflection that made every sentence sound like a question was utterly inappropriate for this type of novel. Also, who doesn't know how to pronounce Marseilles? (Maybe he was confusing it with Versailles? I honestly thought he said Versailles the first time, although it made zero sense.)
I was very disappointed to see that the next book in this series is also narrated by Adam Verner. I will not be listening to it.

The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor. Included on the recording are several shorter works. The Ainulindalë is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age.

Getting a hard copy
Revisado: 03-17-25
This was too difficult to enjoy in audio format. A PDF supplement with maps and other illustrations might help, but even then, without the ability to flip back and forth for reminders of names, relationships and events, it was just too information dense to assimilate from the audio version. The Silmarillion is also for the die-hardest of Tolkien fans, those who have immersed themselves enough in the Lord of the Rings to have a solid framework in which to put this history. There is no plot-line, although the history is fascinating in its own right.
However, I do not regret the six hours I spent listening to this before returning it. Tolkien remains unrivalled in "world-building", as it is now called. His creation of the universe that is home to Middle Earth is nothing short of magnificent.
Narration was excellent.

Bzzz Bzzz
Revisado: 02-22-24
I missed the "Christian Fiction" tag so I was surprised when the first reference to church/God's love/bible study group popped up, which did not happen until well into the story. Christian fiction is not exactly my jam, however, occasional references to church and God were as far as it got, Christianity was not integrated into the story, in fact the Christian references seemed almost gratuitous.
Which basically means it did not detract from the story too much for a non-church goer like myself. And the lack of sex scenes and graphic violence was a plus (also not my jam).
I give this book a solid four in all categories. It was a sensitive tale of two young women unexpectedly thrown together, and their navigation of their new relationship as they together uncovered the mystery of a strange bequest. The characters were appealing and relatable, the story was more of a page turner that I expected, and the narration was good. And yes, bees. What's not to like?
The ending was predictable, but the process of getting there was enjoyable, so who cares. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories of families and friendships. But seriously he should have told the bees! Or maybe a human?

Historia
A mysterious object has appeared out in the snow. Gibbs and Cline are mesmerized. They can’t discern its exact shape and color, nor if it’s moving or fixed in place. But it is there. Isn’t it? Whatever it might be, Hart thinks the thing in the snow is an unwelcome distraction, and probably a huge waste of time. Though, come to think of it, time itself has been a bit wonky lately. Weekends pass in a blur, and he can hardly tell day from night. Gravity seems less-than-reliable. The lights have been flickering weirdly, and he feels an odd thrumming sensation in his beard.

Twisted, Fascinating, Hilarious
Revisado: 01-19-24
After ten minutes listening to this book, I reached for my device to find something else, thinking "What the heck is this?? Is this narrator for real? Life is too short!". But an unknown force stayed my hand. I was already hooked by The Thing in the Snow, just like the characters in this very strange novel. Despite my initial reaction, the narration was perfect for this mesmerizing and hilarious tale of workplace insanity, neurotic personalities and environmental extremity. The more I listened, the more it sounded...oh, so familiar.
This is satire at its best, but any lucky person out there whose mind has not yet been warped by their necessary employment might not find it as appealing as I did.

Too Much Fun!!!!
Revisado: 01-18-24
I enjoyed this from start to finish, and I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone looking for something that's just plain fun. I was vaguely disappointed that the ending did not imply a sequel, because I would love more of this. But who knows, there's always hope, especially if enough people pester the author. Narration was great overall. It could have been a bit more nuanced, but not a detraction from a good listen.

Gamers Only
Revisado: 08-15-23
I was encouraged to try this book by the many reviews praising its worldbuilding and suggesting it could stand on its own as a regular novel. This was the first LitRPG genre book I've tried, and it will be the last. I'm not a gamer, although I have played a bit, and watched others play. This was a little like watching someone play a game, which can be entertaining, but with everything described in WORDS. Yeah. I'm not sure what I expected, because, well, would even a gamer want to listen to all that? If a fraction of the words used to describe the gaming were used to describe the context of the game (the world), or develop a character or two, I might have had a chance with this book. However it takes a Whole Lot Of Words to describe everything that appears on a screen in an actual game, from energy levels to available weapons to information on other players. I would think it would be boring even for an avid gamer to listen to someone read all that. After seven (of 12) hours of this I figured I'd done my due diligence checking out this new genre. I can't speak for gamers, but I found this utterly unappealing. The narrator was pretty good though, especially given what he had to work with.

Historia
Richard Papen had never been to New England before his 19th year. Yet as Richard was accepted and drawn into their inner circle, he learned a terrifying secret that bound them to one another...a secret about an incident in the woods in the dead of night where an ancient rite was brough to brutal life...and lead to a gruesome death.

Why don't I like this book?
Revisado: 07-03-22
I did my utmost, listening for over nine hours, to engage myself in this book. I adored "The Goldfinch" and had high hopes, especially given so many favorable reviews, that I would like this book as well. The writing is without reproach, the scenes are meticulously set, the characters drawn with detail. But somehow I just could not get drawn in to this story. Despite myself having a small New England college background, I could not get interested in this batch of self-obsessed, dissolute young scholars and the predicament that they created for themselves. The narration did not help. This novel is very heavy on atmosphere, the austere Vermont surroundings, the obscure scholarship. The author's pronounced southern twang and nasal tone were constant distractions, being at odds with the somber New England setting. The novel is also heavy on dialogue, and the author was not successful distinguishing the voices of the characters, so it could be hard to keep track of who was saying what to whom. And in this story, that is important. I did not finish the book, so I can't say if it picked up later, or if the massive plot spoiler revealed within the first few minutes was really only a small part of the plot. Nine hours in, there was no indication of this. Many people clearly enjoyed this book, but it's not for everyone.

Not what I'd hoped
Revisado: 04-08-22
After reading so many positive reviews, and also on the recommendation of friends, I took the plunge on this 32+ hour audiobook. After six hours, I returned it. I was hoping for an action packed page turner, with fun characters and maybe with some bonus steamy scenes. Instead, I got a slow moving historical novel, stock characters and an emotionally unrealistic protagonist.
As a vehicle for rendering life in Scotland 200 years ago, it's fine; nice historical details and skillful writing. If it were shorter, I might have stuck it out. But the plotline was not discernable after six hours, the main character did not seem believable, and the romance part was unoriginal and seemed arbitrary. This book simply did not hold my interest. Davina Porter as narrator was, as always, wonderful, and probably the only reason I stayed with it as long as I did.

Great for the Gym
Revisado: 02-14-19
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to distract themselves from the timer on the treadmill. Fast paced, plenty of covert ops gadgetry, a complex and skillfully managed plot line, and more humanity than average for this genre. Also plenty of up close and personal violence, so possibly not the best choice for a family road trip. Possibly not the best choice for a solo road trip either, that's how engaging this book is. Semi? What semi? (tires screech) The narration was excellent, overall a great listen. It only got four stars because after all it is pretty stock action adventure fare, but, sometimes that's just what I'm looking for.

Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Christmas Interlude
Revisado: 12-27-18
Wonderfully narrated, this story is like a classic Christmas card. It’s completely without surprise or creativity but carries the warmth of the season. Highly recommended as a break from daily craziness, although as with much “Olde English” charm you gotta get past the whole privileged class thing. But even that is part of the classic Christmas.
