plot was almost depressingly melodramatic
Revisado: 12-18-24
Drama in itself in stories is fine, but when it's literally putting the story on hold for an entire book it's not incorporated well. this is basically unskippable filler. the actual story doesn't change really at all. it was basically just a soap opera in the setting. the entirety of the book could be summed up with rezkin having romance with an elf and a queen died for... reasons? I don't think any of the rest of that is actually important to the plot. the main plot progressed by saying the villain is building a super evil doomsday weapon... it's mentioned a couple times in there... it does... something... it's just if you liked the other series this isn't really that. if anything I found rezkin infuriating because his reasons made no sense, had direct consequences, and no one said "rezkin this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard", and it very much feels like dumbing down his character for the sake of drama.

2nd book is fairly similar to the first
Revisado: 05-15-23
I guess to start, the narrator got really into the voices, at least for Wes. it's not the only thing I like, but as someone actively reading it and intending to continue, I wanted to note things that I considered particularly off-putting, irritating, or just otherwise noteworthy.
Wes is a lot less idealistic, but the story struggles with the "show, don't tell" rule on that front as he often reflects how distrustful he is now. it gets a bit grating when the gritty character needs to remind you they're gritty and depressed. Moreso, while Wes does think and is even witty at times, certain reflections that don't make sense send him into a full-blown panic. things with far fewer implications than what he's outright ignored. it gets annoying when he realizes the world wasn't what he thought in high school when he's literally in another world. The world already isn't what he thought. To be fair, he's been through quite the trauma, but that kind of leads to the next point. His rather brutal torture is about the only real challenge he faces. Everything is just conveniently weaker than him.
To avoid being solely negative, I want to clarify that my negatives are as a reader, the things I just find annoying. things like stress not really translating well in the story. The story itself has weight, history, a good bit of mystery to it, good fantasy stuff, and doesn't spam stats at you. you could honestly forget it's a litrpg. it's not a perfect story. Parts are downright corny, but it's not quite what I'd put as mid. it's a bit above average. The narration is good, even if Breena's voice feels like it's carving out my eardrums sometimes, and Wes isn't a total loser or idiot. Just incredibly melodramatic at times.

The decision to start a new life is never an easy one, but for Joe the transition was far from figurative. Becoming a permanent addition to a game world, it doesn't take long to learn that people with his abilities are actively hunted. In fact, if the wrong people gained knowledge of what he was capable of, assassins would appear in droves.

its got some going for it
Revisado: 03-24-22
There's a usual trend in litRPG where magic systems are super restrictive, its good to see a bit more magic freedom. The premise is solid enough, though could really have been more thoroughly explored. However, the main character really struggles as a character in parts. For someone with so much supposed combat experience and medical knowledge, which might i add they don't make idiots medics, he just doesn't live up to that. He rarely thinks on his own, he just runs around asking people a million questions. His abilities do things for him and too much happens out of convenience. The amount of times he makes egregious and obvious mistakes, even repeating ones, it's just hard to see this guy as anything beyond a freshmen that took some first aid classes. It might be worth it if you have nothing else on your plate and want to see where the magic system leads, but i wouldn't call this a must buy. it won't kill you but you might get a tad annoyed.

Those in power do not believe in the possibility of triumph against the will of the gods, and instead squander their time and effort in indulging their needs and desires as the world quickly rots away around them. Mankind’s only hope rests on the shoulders of a man they hate the most. A man who has taken every possible measure, both accepted and forbidden, to attain power. Sungchul Kim, the man who reached the pinnacle of strength, now stands alone against the Calamities. Not because he is a hero, but because of a promise.

good performance, situation with the mc is odd
Revisado: 06-05-21
I say odd as it is subjective at this point. I dont think Kim was poorly done, but he can be a bit infuriating. I'm not sure which I dislike more, a character who cant do anything because they're so shocked, or a character who refuses to get involved because he views everything as not worth his time. You won't really get much from the character himself. He seems reserved even towards the reader. if you were hoping to see how an OP guy would interact with the world this isnt really the book. Most of his interactions are him ignoring people and them being amazed. Hes also really despondent and a bit erratic in his emotions, but it sounds like hes traumatized. I say sounds because most of the time you dont get information about why hes like this. Hes also not very heroic. Hes cynical and views pretty much everyone as insignificant, but hes supposedly seen a lot. That said the people around him are surprisingly ignorant. He doesn't hide his name, but his stats. However, no one considers the possibility of him hiding his stats. It wasnt explicitly stated if this ability was rare, but considering hiding identity was introduced fairly early I dont see why it isnt questioned.
TLDR Its not a bad book, but i dont know if a hero who refuses to act is really interesting for everyone.

Strong start, weak finish
Revisado: 05-02-21
The beginning was cool and theres a lot of unique stuff in this, but the story gets a tad too coincidental. Including spoilers in a review kindof ruins a review so I'll just say the premise is good but the story could be executed better. Definitely more so near the end.

Jacob and his band of succubi have made it to the Fourth Circle of Hell, but that was the easy part. In order to defeat Azazel on his own home turf, Jacob will need to hone his powers and level up before he takes on the Demon Lord of War. And what better way to do that than competing in demonic jousts, going head to head with the dragon Leviathan, and giving the Circle’s most renowned pirate a run for his money? The throne is so close, and Jake’s going to do whatever it takes to seize it.

its meh.
Revisado: 04-27-21
succubus lord as a series is half porn. Not really surprising or really overreaching since well its succubi. That said I wish the characters were more than their one assigned identity or really bonded beyond sex. Also why do people with magic get shocked by acts of magic? Todd is ok... rarely. comic relief is cool but it gets annoying when its forcibly interjected in literally everything. I kindof just assigned that to how we are supposed to feel about Todd, but a sidekick that no one likes isnt a positive for the series just because its intended. My biggest complaint I guess is that some aspects seem well executed others seem just tossed together. it's really inconsistent. if you know eric vall it's his books. it's not revolutionary.

Historia
Hoping to cure his curse and return to his fiancée, Jason Wolfe agrees to command a corporate monster-hunting unit. But the team isn’t exactly what he had in mind.... A priest, a ninja, a zombie, and a guy who looks like he should be working crew on the carny circuit. To be fair, not all of Jason’s new charges are keen on being trained by a werewolf. But ready or not, the team has just been called to a job. Something is snatching children from a small town in southern Mexico. Worse, all signs point to vampires - and a darker, more malevolent force.

it's good just dont think too hard
Revisado: 12-09-20
The overall story is nice, but the whole werewolf commando thing falls apart sometimes. Jason is so arrogantly ignorant sometimes, especially in the beginning. This mans is a giant blue wolf transformed by an old god, and has personally met wizards, but when someone is introduced as a priest or a ninja he scoffs like they couldn't possibly exist. Another factor is just how frustrating fights are in these. Jason is a spec ops werewolf, but he gets stomped by some no name vampires? I understand needing to power check the MC but special forces trains in hand to hand and even saying technique doesn't translate to his new body, principle still does. Hes not supposed to be a normal werewolf either, isnt this the champion of a god? He threw a dragon around last book, but he has to wrestle his arm away from what turned out to be just vampire goons? I know my header is dont think about it, this is why. If you think about some of the things they can get frustrating. this is still a great story to listen to, but it's got its issues in there. I also wish there was a bit more depth to his character than commander and wants to not be a werewolf. he rarely jokes and when he does it's really stale humor. That one might actually turn people away since half the fun of contemporary fantasy is the fun characters and their adaptations into the modern world. I do like James Patrick Cronin as the narrator though. TLDR it's good but it's not a masterpiece.

a review of the series up till Glitch
Revisado: 04-17-20
I wanted to review later books too but it doesnt really help people looking into the series to put a review they wont see until the latest release. I'll keep plot points out. Kaiden has a lot I like in a Main character. Cocky and laid back, hes also at least consistently portrayed as good at what he does. While things can get a little cliche, I feel how hes voiced and written is a really good example of characters with more natural speech. Some books can get away with it a little in like fantasy settings, but doing a civilization based off future earth and having people speak in full proper english would sound off. The narration does fantastic at making the characters, characters. The universe is well described, at least to my casual listening nothing was ever done or said that really confused me. The behind the scenes story shows itself to be tangible though it takes a bit to actually swing into effect. Theres a lot of coincidences some are pretty obvious to draw the plot, but it doesn't do much disservice to the story. I really enjoyed the series up to where I am now and would actually highly reccomend it if you like scifi and want a longer series than a book or two.

If the Master enslaves the ogres...this war is over before it even begins. So, Mason, his women, and the half-ogre Haragh must travel to Jagruel, the ogre territory, and thwart the Master’s plan of increasing his army. The only problem with their plan is that ogres are more inclined to eat Mason than talk to him.

Some peeves definitely hit
Revisado: 04-17-20
Narrations good and this late into the series I'm used to the oddly horny characters. it's ok but It hit some peeves I find in characters in books. Inconsistency is one. Theres going to be points where actions, decisions, and thoughts are marginally out of character. they dont derail the plot, but they do stand out. Book 9 and the only real character development has been Mason. The other characters just dont have the depth so when one starts acting irregularly we have to have cleche arguements and exposition just to understand what's going on. Its a reoccurring thing in the series. I cant really give 3.5's here but I dont think the story is a 4 either so it gets the unofficial 3.5. I like Mason's work if not his general character and the world is pretty flushed out with a clear conflict and proper antagonist goals. I just wish the characters themselves got a little more flushed out so that when one has an internal struggle we dont need their thoughts laid out to us so blatantly. It makes for weird development especially since the conflicts could probably have been brought up much more naturally over the coarse of the books. None of it is really surprising. Just cherry picking at that point though. I do like the books, I just wish they spent more time building what they had instead of the gang constantly dealing with something new. Pretty lengthy review for 4 stars but I dont think it's bad enough for a 3. It has its ups and downs is all.

it's okay for the most part
Revisado: 02-17-20
the main character has a bit of personality but his personality is really kindof annoying. the most I connected with him is he lost his patience and shot a guy and even then it was like 0 to 100. didnt kneecap the guy just got pissed and shot him in the head. its something i could see him doing especially given the circumstances but the dudes supposed to be the goodie guy always helping. Killing a guy because you didnt like what he said and then he didnt even question it. Thats a heck of a moral leap there. Also the berries are getting old too. the whole eat these and your back to health with 0 consequences is convenient to move the plot along but it's also just really a cop out. The fact that his little harem is supposed to be so strong and willful but immediately just blush and step aside with any amount of flirtation is also incredibly annoying. it feels like hes not really in a relationship hes just got companions the he drags around and bangs occassionally... okay a lot. Also **spoilers???** the whole connecting to the earth was random an unneccessary. you dont need monk talk to say he just has to pay attention at the material to alter it. if hes just now thinking of it, I get that it would be more interesting to deepen your magic but Mason is literally brand new. saying hed never thought of altering somethings composition because it shouldn't be physically possible is a much more logical reason than "become the rock". I know the author will probably not see this and all but if there were anything I would say would improve the books it's making the women actual characters with differing views and who will actually put their foot down, and stop making everything so convenient for the mc. The hero can win overall he doesn't have to win literally all the time. This is essentially a series where everything goes the hero's way all the time. if you're looking for any real drama I wouldn't really suggest this but if you want to hear a decent overarching world with a lot of characters sure I could recommend it.
