Historia
Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.

Interesting and insightful Read
Revisado: 11-04-23
I’ve always admired Mitt Romney but after reading Coppins’ book, I have even more respect for the man. Putting principles over politics & political gain, he is what I would expect in an elected official. Unfortunately most do not operate this way. I appreciate his willingness to work across the aisle to compromise. He is a rare animal in Washington - a politician who works and actually studies and researches the issues he feels strongly about. I’m sorry he will be leaving public life.

Historia
James Henry, a kind-hearted professor of English literature, is forced to move back home to Quincy's Gap, a tiny town in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, to care for his aging father. Shortly after moving into a house that hasn't changed since his childhood, the overweight, divorced, book-loving cheese puff addict accepts a position as head librarian and joins a supper club for dieters who call themselves the "Flab Five". Avoiding carbs is almost impossible in this deep-fried, all-you-can-eat Southern town.

Historia
VBI (Vermont Bureau of Investigation) head Joe Gunther and his team are called in to investigate a series of violent deaths that appear unrelated until telltale clues reveal a linkage between them and that all of the deaths are, in fact, murders. However, apart from a single drop of unexplained blood left at each crime scene, there are no obvious connections between the victims or the cases. In the search for the elusive truth, the VBI must plumb the depths of every suspect's past.

Surprise Ending
Revisado: 11-07-21
I have been listening to all the books in order and this is one of my favorites. This is the first book that follows a different plot line - the culprit is introduced much earlier. I still prefer Tom Taylorson’s narration to this voice actor.

Asian Crime set in Vermont & Canada.
Revisado: 10-25-21
Another interesting story. Each book delves into another topic - this one on Asian crime is no exception. Mayor is an intelligent writer and goes into depth each time. His vivid descriptions take me to places I’ve never been - this time to Montreal. His books are well worth the read.

Historia
When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but he's too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there's a leak in the police force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

Like the other three - lots of twists and turns and false leads and possible subjects. I did suspect the culprit, though. Joe has more close encounters with death than anyone should.

Historia
Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro, Vermont, police force has a serious problem: in a community where a decade could pass without a single murder, the body count is suddenly mounting. Innocent citizens are being killed - and others set up - seemingly orchestrated by a mysterious ski-masked man. Signs suggest that a three-year-old murder trial might lie at the heart of things, but it's a case that many in the department would prefer remained closed. A man of quiet integrity, Lt. Gunther knows that he must pursue the case to its conclusion, wherever it leads.

Mary Daheim's wonderful world of Hillside Manor is zany, engrossing, and positively addicting! In Suture Self, Judith McMonigle Flynn is scheduled for a hip replacement. Instead of looking ahead to her new mobility, she's worried. "Routine surgery" recently cost a local actress and a star baseball pitcher their lives. Though Judith smells malice, she successfully survives her operation - but another patient isn't so lucky.

Historia
Dublin, 1962. Within the gated grounds of the convent of the Sisters of the Holy Redemption lies one of the city's Magdalen Laundries. Once places of refuge, the laundries have evolved into grim workhouses. Some inmates are "fallen" women - unwed mothers, prostitutes, or petty criminals. Most are ordinary girls whose only sin lies in being too pretty, too independent, or tempting the wrong man. Among them is 16-year-old Teagan Tiernan, sent by her family when her beauty provokes a lustful revelation from a young priest.

Powerful Telling Of Life in a Magdalen Laundry
Revisado: 04-26-21
This book held particular interest for me because my husband’s sister was adopted in the 1950’s from a Catholic convent in Ireland. The depiction of life in the laundry was probably very true. The whole operation is a stain on the Catholic church there.
