Historia
After 9/11, the United States made one of the most secretive and dangerous deals in its history. The evidence against the powerful Saudis who coordinated the attack would be buried. In return, King Faisal would promise to keep the oil flowing and deal with the conspirators in his midst. When the king's own nephew is discovered funding ISIS, the president suspects that the Saudis never intended to live up to their agreement.

Great story line as usual.

New narrator, I really liked Guidall but this guy was very good. The narration equally enhanced the story.

Historia
Apart from The Last of the Mohicans, most Americans know little of the French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years' War, and yet it remains one of the most fascinating periods in our history. In January 2006, PBS will air The War That Made America, a four-part documentary about this epic conflict. Fred Anderson, the award-winning and critically acclaimed historian, has written the official tie-in to this exciting television event.

The title says it all.
Revisado: 05-04-24
The historical details were well laid out and told. Americans should understand how this war that preceded the Revolutionary War shaped just about everything that followed.
It also fills in historical gaps you might have about places you’ve visited such as Quebec City, Montreal, Pittsburgh, Oswego, Lake George and others.

Historia
Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.

Inside and disheartening story of current politics and politicians
Revisado: 02-22-24
The story immensely benefitted from the access Romney provided to himself and lots of relevant documents, including his personal journal. The result is a much lower than typical level of hearsay reporting in a biography. Coppins is a talented and honest reporter.
Romney is clearly an honorable man in a now highly dishonorable profession. His private insights about the many idiots and sycophants walking the halls of Congress, plus the biggest one of all who occupied the white house from 2016-20 may confirm your personal assessments.
I’m glad I listened but doing so further diminished my opinion of elected officials, particularly most Republicans.

This book really makes you think about the tragic state of American society
Revisado: 09-15-20
How a news outlet that does little actual news reporting (and almost no objective/impartial reporting) is actually the nation’s most watched news outlet says a lot about the state of our society. The fact that it is in lockstep with the administration, by design instead of performing its constitutionally-protected watchdog duty says even more.
This book provides insight as to how this all came about, particularly the oneness with the Trump administration. What may surprise readers is the extent to which Fox commentators (primarily Hannity Carlson and Ingram) influence and advise the President as opposed to just echoing and amplifying what he says.
Hoax is well researched and delivered.
It’s important reading for people interested in the preservation of American democracy but it won’t make them feel better about the perils it faces.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

Revisado: 06-02-20
Behind the 50 states, red and blue, Republican and Democrat, and any other distinctions or categorizations you like (or hate) are the cultural underpinnings of our people dating back to before the nation’s founding.
This book explains their origins and development and carries them forward to present day. I feel better informed and prepared to understand how and why people think and act differently outside of my cultural nation (New Netherland, one of the 11 regional cultures of North America.)

Historia
A toxic presidential election is underway in an America already badly weakened by internal divisions. While politicians focus entirely on maintaining their own power, ISIS kidnaps a brilliant French microbiologist and forces him to begin manufacturing anthrax. Slickly produced videos chronicling his progress and threatening an imminent attack are posted to the internet, intensifying the hysteria gripping the United States.

Whistlestop tells the human story of nervous gambits hatched in first-floor hotel rooms, failures of will before the microphone, and the cross-country crack-ups of long-planned stratagems. At the bar at the end of a campaign day, these are the stories reporters rehash for themselves and embellish for newcomers. In addition to the familiar tales, Whistlestop also remembers the forgotten stories about the bruising and reckless campaigns of the 19th century.

Puts 2016 election into helpful context
Revisado: 11-14-16
Book is well researched and interestingly presented. Just watch Face the Nation for a taste of John Dickerson.
Regardless of where you came out on the 2016 election this book will provide a helpful context. Believe it or not it wasn't all that unique in our history.
In fact, I'd say it fell somewhere into the middle of the "crazy" to "uneventful" continuum based on what I learned in this book.

Historia
United States Senator Cory Booker makes the case that the virtues of empathy, responsibility, and action must guide our nation toward a brighter future. Raised in northern New Jersey, Cory Booker went to Stanford University on a football scholarship, accepted a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, then studied at Yale Law School. Graduating from Yale, his options were limitless. He chose public service.

Generally inspirational and genuine narrative from a next gen public servant
Revisado: 04-04-16
Easy to be cynical about semi autobiographic work of a politician but this book challenges that perception.
Any Stanford and then Yale Law grad who chooses to live in a Newark public housing project called Brick City for several years instead of heading to Wall St is likely to have a different perspective on our problems and solutions.
Booker offers them through a rich set of stories from his years living and serving there. In this season of frequently inane political rhetoric it's a refreshing change

When Mark Zuckerberg announced in front of a cheering Oprah audience his $100 million pledge to transform the Newark Schools - and to solve the education crisis in every city in America - it looked like a huge win for then-mayor Cory Booker and governor Chris Christie. But their plans soon ran into a constituency not so easily moved - Newark's key education players, fiercely protective of their billion-dollar-per-annum system.

A primer on how the road to hell is paved with good intentions
Revisado: 11-21-15
No bad guys in this story just completely diverging agendas for fixing a school system everyone agreed was broken. This divergence causes them still to be broken some $100+million later.
A solid piece of reporting that attempts to explain how more money doesn't usually fix the sort of problems you find in a city long in decline.
