Historia
William Deresiewicz, a leading critic of the arts and of contemporary culture, set out to answer those questions. Based on interviews with artists of all kinds, The Death of the Artist argues that we are in the midst of an epochal transformation. If artists were artisans in the Renaissance, bohemians in the 19th century, and professionals in the 20th, a new paradigm is emerging in the digital age, one that is changing our fundamental ideas about the nature of art and the role of the artist in society.

Finally someone said it
Revisado: 10-04-24
This is the first indispensable tome on being a creative who’s just trying to work amidst the bizarre, personal brand driven, tech choked, “wantrepreneur” hypnosis that is our current audience environment. This book is so good, and so repeatedly on point, that I’m getting copy for my mom so she finally gets the struggle of the ever shifting modern art market.
Bravo.

Didn’t want this book to end!
Revisado: 08-28-24
JMS has been a part of my world since the original airing or Babylon 5 in the 90s, and his Amazing Spider-Man run was smack in the middle of my biggest period of reading comics as an adult. To say I voraciously consumed it all is an understatement, as he is easily one of the great fiction writers of our time. I also happen to now make comics professionally, and had the great pleasure of meeting Joe on the busy sidewalk heading into New York Comic Con in 2017– likely as he was writing this very book.
So you could say I was personally invested in this reading experience.
And it did not disappoint!
The complexities of its structure and impact could only have come from someone possessed of such vision as Straczynski.
Filled with incredible characters, an unstoppable, seething real life villain, plus surprise cameos and mysteries you MUST get to the bottom of, this may be the most gripping autobiography ever written. Not to mention the multiple times it brought me to tears with its shear, brutal honesty.
If you love the work of JMS and especially if you create your own stories, love genre storytelling & nostalgia, and amazing character arcs, look no further for your next great read!

Historia
From a young age, Molly Crabapple had the eye of an artist and the spirit of a radical. After a restless childhood on New York's Long Island, she left America to see Europe and the Near East, a young artist plunging into unfamiliar cultures, notebook always in hand, drawing what she observed. Returning to New York City after 9/11 to study art, she posed nude for sketch artists and sketchy photographers, danced burlesque, and modeled for the world-famous Suicide Girls.

Reflections
Revisado: 06-10-24
This was a staggeringly relatable and gripping read.
Watching this all transpire as a fan of Molly’s for decades, then hearing about the insides of it in her own words is a truly remarkable reading experience. There were many “Wow! I remember reading those tweets as it happened”, or “THAT’S why she drew that?!” moments. Deep artist career cuts that pay dividends in these pages.
Plus, living a similar illustrator’s life, experiencing many of the same angsts, curiosities, and challenges of being an artist in the wreckage of late stage capitalism with democracy on the brink,
I cannot recommend this book enough as a road map or cathartic therapy to peers and upcoming creators.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Historia
Wing Chun is the most popular form of Chinese kung fu in the world today, with more than four million practitioners. This guide will fascinate and educate anyone interested in the martial arts, from beginner to master. The art as it is presently understood has been handed down from teacher to student for more than 300 years. Until now, no one has ever stepped back and taken a critical look at why this art's techniques are presented and performed the way they are.

The second half of your training
Revisado: 03-20-24
This immediately jumped to the top 5 of my most influential, indispensable personal reads, along with the Tao te Ching and the Art of War.
If you practice Wing Chun, especially Ip family style, the wisdom in this text is powerful and inescapable. It ties together everything you’ve learned with simple wisdom and understanding, while simultaneously smashing all the big kung fu myths with a flurry of chain punches.
This book made me twice as good at Wing Chun with just one read. I’ll definitely be reading it many times and sharing with other practitioners to dive even deeper.

Norm core influencer worship. A few too many “right” turns, or maybe just too analytical and not critical enough of its role models.

When the last honest citizen of Poisonville was murdered, the Continental Op stayed on to punish the guilty--even if that meant taking on an entire town. Good ideas, too loosely connected

Would benefit from structured deep dives into each point after they’re more clearly delineated. Still, I’ll definitely dig deeper into the thoughts he presents— plenty of potential for a more mind blowing book.
