Historia
Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. It serves as a salute to New York City during the late 60s and 70s and to its rich and poor, its hustlers and hellions. A true fable, it is a portrait of two young artists' ascent, a prelude to fame.

Beautiful, deeply romantic story of artists intertwined
Revisado: 12-28-24
The profound connection of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe is so touchingly relayed in this powerful book. Theirs is a singular relationship, and the story of it is told with singular poetry and great humanity. I found myself inspired by Smith's confessional perspective of her various influences. Love stories are perhaps a dime a dozen, but you'll never hear one quite like this, and rarely one so personal or true.

Historia
Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age - and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. But years later, she learns about love for herself and the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors.

American Divine Comedy
Revisado: 08-05-20
Listening to Maya Angelou read this book is a thoroughly beautiful and unique experience of both the art of writing, and the art of audiobook narration. She is both the character of Marguerite, and we experience the relationships and inner life of her girlhood, adolescence, and the beginnings of womanhood through her thoughts and words, so meticulously and loving chosen. But also, as a narrator, we experience Maya, the mature artist and woman. We hear her tone as she ushers her own self through the story.
This dynamic captivated me in much the same way that Dante's Divine Comedy has the poet Dante ushering the pilgrim, his lost, younger self through Hell and Purgatory onward to Paradise in verse. Angelou's work is as spiritually poignant though less easily compartmentalized by religion, less romantic, more painfully human and much more deeply personal.
There is as much beauty and human insight in this book as can be found in any work of literature. Any American who wishes to know their people and their country must not overlook this work.

An absolute gem!

What a life, and what a human being. We are blessed that Norman Lear shares so much with us. Experience it if you have any small interest in humanity and in particular the storytelling arts.
