Historia
Imagine, if you can, a shy, skinny young girl growing up in a small Southern Patriarchal town in the 1960s and '70s. All she wants is peace, love, normality, and freedom to dream and be who she wants to be. She also wants her mother and siblings to be safe and free from harm. When her alcoholic father - a member of the local KKK - beats the family into submission and demands silence about his ugly secret deeds, everyone is too frightened to cry out for help.

A journey of the soul
Revisado: 08-22-21
This book is an engaging story of survival. From a childhood of abuse and trauma with the corresponding damage to the psyche. The author takes the reader on what sometimes feels like a rollercoaster ride of tragedy, humor, and bad decisions to an eventual haven of self acceptance, coping skills, and survival.
The author very skillfully weaves this story in a way that makes you feel you are riding along as a passenger in her life. You cannot help but root for her and and feel joy for her in the end.

Every nation needs its creation myth, and since Texas was a nation before it was a state, it's no surprise that its myths bite deep. There's no piece of history more important to Texans than the Battle of the Alamo, when Davy Crockett and a band of rebels went down in a blaze of glory fighting for independence from Mexico, losing the battle but setting Texas up to win the war.

Paul Simon said it best!
Revisado: 06-22-21
“When I look back at all the crap I learned in high school, it’s a wonder I can think at all.”
This book provides another example of the propaganda we were all taught. The war for independence in Texas was fought over slavery, not freedom. Travis, Crockett, and Bowie were not the great heroes we had learned about. The American Immigrants, most of whom had entered Texas illegally, defied Mexican laws, refused to pay Mexican taxes, and insisted on keeping slaves when slavery was illegal in Mexico.
This book is well researched and tells the story in a clear, concise way backed up with evidence. The irony is that the Mexicans were saying the same things about the border then that we are saying now. This was a great book!

From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.

This book shows how several countries are experiencing similar movements. Nationalism, fear of immigrants, distrust of the press, and belief in wild conspiracies are common in many countries. These are precarious times with no easy solution in sight.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

Blown away
Revisado: 02-02-21
I remember the mini series when I was in high school but I was working nights and didn’t see every episode. I also didn’t have the historical knowledge to fully appreciate the story. Now, as a retired history teacher, I was just amazed at the research, the detail, and the writing. I was blown away.

At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly 30 years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage - sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States - that to Albright, looks very much like fascism.
