A story that shares the perspectives of Orthodox Jews most of us will never talk to, so a needed chance to learn and reflect. At the same time, mainstream perspectives rendered with as much insight. Centering on a friendship the story allows two young people to experience challenges and newness while they grow into taking responsibility for themselves as young adults. The story addresses hate crime and the healing process. Loved listening to these thoughtful young people grow.

Tartt occupies each character fully, bringing them to life in the way she delivers slight turns of phrase, pauses, intonation. Yet, she is true to the books perspective, ultimately bringing about everything through Mattie’s eyes—and her worldview. Her essay at the end brings in personal and historical information that enhances the experience. The whole work of art—original novel and artful narration— is not to be missed.

The story is strong and gentle, answering key questions the traditional myths leave unasked. Characters are complex. The writing is graceful—spare as the Odyssey itself is, but never flagging. This is a rich feminist imagining of the fullness of Circe’s story. The narration is exquisite, each phrase rendered in the appropriate mood, whether marveling, joyous, grieving, or hot with anger. The best i’ve heard on audible.

Compelling story with vibrant characters and lots to learn about this world. I especially appreciate the prickly strong protagonist, best complex female character I’ve come across. Any woman over 40 especially will resonate with her attitude and strength. Stories weave seamlessly shifting back and forth with perfect timing. In the tradition of revolutionary stories in which protagonists come into their power and insight slowly. In the tradition of science fiction with complex worlds to learn. Above all an homage to Octavia Butler, who write science fiction better than anyone ever. This story lacks the depth of driving questions that Butler brings to her work and for that reason is a lighter read. On the other hand, Jemisin goes where Butler didn’t/wouldn’t in terms of race and sexuality, which makes it a story for today’s conversations. But the narrator. The narrator! She bring such character to the whole of it, communication all the emotion across so many characters. The best I’ve ever heard. A great adventure story with so much room for the next two books. You really can’t go wrong.
