Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

What a crazy ride! It was a little hard to first to get in to, but about 1/4th the way in you’ll be addicted. The Roman-like names are a bit hard to get used to and remember, but it eventually clicks. Performance bugs can be found in a few spots, but overall really good! Islington’s last series is my favorite trilogy out there, so he set the bar very high for this one. It’s worth listening too, not sure it will be as full of twists as his last trilogy, but still good! Imagine Rome had a Hogwarts, Potter was a closet-prince, and his adopted parents were double-agent spymasters. There you go!

Historia
Acclaimed author Michael J. Sullivan created instant best sellers with his spellbinding Riyria Revelations series. This first volume introduces Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater, two enterprising thieves who end up running for their lives when they’re framed for the death of the king. Trapped in a conspiracy bigger than they can imagine, their only hope is unraveling an ancient mystery - before it’s too late.

A pleasant surprise

I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s definitely historic fiction, not epic fantasy. It’s very much Arthurian with a twist of Tolkien. Story is good, but somewhat predictable. In comparison with other authors in todays age, I’d give this a solid A grade. Performance was good at the start, felt like it occasionally fizzled toward the end.

Historia
After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war. Neither side has gained an advantage, and the threat of a betrayal by Dalinar’s crafty ally Taravangian looms over every strategic move. Now, as new technological discoveries by Navani Kholin’s scholars begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation. The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals.

Sanderson, why?!

I’m struggling - I’ve listened to all your main works up to this. I’ve realized that you have the same cadence to every single iteration of this series, as well as Mistborn for that matter. The beauty you bring to character development has always been something other authors suffer a borderline intellectual deficiency for. Your story progression spanning over each chapter is slower than most would find appropriate, but it’s when you have dragged us for 15 hours, we get a massive story projection (either forward or sideward). As someone who actually studied theology, I’ve noticed a sad and gross trend in each book. You pick apart every religion in each of your creations. Knowing your bio from your site, it’s actually really surprising to me you take the positions you do. Sometimes it’s tolerable, but you show a constant two-coined approach to every ethical dilemma; whether it’s religion, sexual orientation in the military, values (in this book, it was hope). You grossly adopt modern day cultural standards and assume it’s a required thing to address in your books (or that your readers even want to read about). To quote you, “storms” Brandon, what ever made you think we want to read about the brokenness and depravity of this world in your novels? We have George Martin for that. If you’re going to flirt with these issues, pretend to write clean novels and leave your readers seeing it all; how can it not look like you’re double-minded, or struggling with your own identity with this genre. I promise you’re relevant. Please don’t keep trying to reinvent your writing style; especially in the middle of a series.

This a prequel, though it really is a stand alone book.
Thematically speaking, you will find an often-dodged topic in fantasy: how to avoid one’s gift and destiny for principle, and the value of life. Someone gifted with death is given the dilemma of imprison his gift to choose the path of light. At points of maturing, our hero is presented with multiple moral debacles, and emphasizes the criticality of control, over raw power that constantly begs to be released from its prison. You’ll enjoy the book, and be thankful that baby Westin is getting older so his voice isn’t as annoying. Some parts are predictable, but overall a great listen that will further your sleep loss.
