Evan Smoak lives by his own code. Once he was known as Orphan X. Trained as an off-the-books government assassin and spoken about only in whispers, Evan Smoak was one of the most talented - and most feared - men in the Program. But he broke free and reinvented himself as The Nowhere Man, a figure shrouded in mystery, known for helping the truly desperate. If anyone is truly desperate, it’s Max Merriweather.

Evan Smoak is Orphan X. Or was. He left the program, but the program doesn’t want him gone. They want him eliminated. So far, they aren’t having any luck. Evan manages to stay a step ahead and come out on top.
His alter ego, The Nowhere Man, helps people who need his kind of expertise. For this book, it’s Max Merriweather. A fairly simple job, as jobs go, Evan takes care of the problem. Except he hasn’t. And Max is still in danger. The more Evan digs the worse it gets until he has to call in some friends to give him a hand.
I absolutely love these books. Like a speeding bullet, the action starts at the beginning and doesn’t let up until the end. Evan is my boyfriend now. That’s just the way it is. I don’t make the rules.
This story is an adrenaline laced rush of danger, mystery, and humor. I know when I pick up an Orphan X story I’m going for a wild nail-biting ride. One where the pages don’t turn fast enough. Good thing I’m listening to the audiobooks because I can always crank up the speed while listening. As long as Scott Brick doesn’t sound like a chipmunk I can go pretty fast. Speaking of Scott Brick, he is Orphan X. What an awesome performance!

Orphan X, Evan Smoak, is going up against the President of the United States. This will be his toughest assignment yet. With his life on the line, will he be able to wipe out the most protected man on the planet?
I listened to this last year so the finer details are a bit fuzzy. However, it’s Orphan X, my new favorite action thriller series, so going by my rating on Goodreads, I know I loved it.
Evan’s enemy this time is powerful and so well-protected I had to wonder, how the hekin was he going to take out his target without getting killed himself. The beauty of the author’s writing is that the reader gets no hints (or very little) as to Evan’s plan. It all unrolls as you read. Sometimes things don’t always go as planned and Evan has to improvise. We only know this because Evan reveals it as so. It’s exciting to just strap yourself into the seat and hold on tight for the ride. Because, make no mistake, it is a ride. A wild ride. Careening down a steep mountainside and all you have for brakes are your Fred Flintstone feet. Exhilarating! And that ending? Holy shizzle!
This is book 4, so Scott Brick is definitely Evan Smoak. A+++ for narration.

Historia
Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence.

Alyssa’s grandmother is a wisewoman to Lord Dillon, and before him, his father. But as she has aged Alyssa takes over for her with no one the wiser since they are covered from head to toe in umbral robes. But one day, the jig, as they say, is up and she has some ‘splaining to do. And fast.
Ok, so I listened to this back in July of 2023. It was right after my mom died and I was so busy helping my brothers with her estate and the traveling back and forth from NC to OH took its toll. It’s now eight months later and I can’t really remember all the details. However, I do remember I was entranced and listening to the book made the drive fly by. I remember excitement, tension, danger, romance, steaminess, excellent dialogue, and ass kicking. Everything I expect from a Dianne Duvall book. And as a first listener of Kirsten Potter, I have to say bravo! All-in-all a great way to pass the time. Highly recommend.

The Nowhere Man. He’s got skills. Mad skills. And he’ll use them to help a person out. But only once. No repeat customers. He’s just living his life to the best of his ability when his past comes knocking. Things are about to get hairy.
Ho-ly Shizzle. I saw a review for this series on Twitter and wondered how I had never heard of it. I was happy it was listed on Kindle Unlimited but then I noticed something I had no idea about. KU has some books you can get with Audible. WTF?! So I grabbed it and listened on my drive home to North Carolina from Ohio. I have to tell you, it made the trip fly by! I was engrossed from the start. Orphan X is one hell of a rip roaring, action-packed, character driven book that will entertain and surprise. Evan Smoak, the Nowhere Man, is a character that will grab your heart and not let go. I love him. I love him for his skills, his faith in the Commandments taught to him by his mentor, his uncertainty in trying to live like a “normal” person, and his loneliness. He’s a character you can really sink your teeth into. Not in a kinky way or anything. The plot, the world, the writing are all great, but Evan is the reason this book is one of my favorite reads of the year. I said I love him, right? Just sayin’.
The story is awesome, but having Scott Brick do the narrating makes it sublime. As far as I’m concerned he is Evan Smoak. And I’ve listened to two more books since. I know of which I speak. I told my husband about this book and he was all, meh. Then we traveled to Ohio together and I convinced him to listen to book 2, The Nowhere Man, with me. He was hooked from the start. See? I know what he likes even when he’s skeptical. LOL We even listened to Orphan X on the way back home even though I’d already read it. I didn’t mind though. If you’re a fan of books with the likes of Jason Bourne, Jericho Quinn, or Scot Harvath then this should be right up your alley.

I used to work for the Telepath’s Guild before they kicked me out for a drug habit that wasn’t entirely my fault. Now I work for the cops, helping Homicide Detective Isabella Cherabino put killers behind bars. My ability to get inside the twisted minds of suspects makes me the best interrogator in the department. But the normals keep me on a short leash. When the Tech Wars ripped the world apart, the Guild stepped up to save it. But they had to get scary to do it - real scary.

A recovering drug addict who is also a powerful telepath works for the police department helping to solve crimes. Most times it’s just grinding away at normal harder than usual to break criminals. But sometimes he helps Homicide Detective Isabella Cherabino solve murders. And this time, there’s a serial killer on the loose.
The entire book is first person and our battered and broken hero is never really addressed by name until the end. Anyway, the telepathic crime fighter has a drug problem that he tries really hard to overcome. He’s fallen off the wagon before and had stricter sanctions put upon him, not to mention losing the trust of his co-workers and place of employment, so he knows what’s at stake each time a craving hits. Now there’s a serial killer on the loose and it looks like it’s someone like him. At least, with abilities similar to his which makes things even harder.
Set in a near future where the Tech Wars have already happened and tech is now severely regulated, it’s pretty bleak. Add paranormal abilities to some people who are regulated by an entirely different governing body and there’s strain in an already strained atmosphere. It all makes for a tense and compelling read. Or listen in my case since I have the audiobook. A fascinating look at one possible future.

John Keller is a regular guy. Not too handsome, not too fugly, just pretty much forgettable. Which is the way he likes it considering he’s a hit man. Based out of New York City, he works with an Old Man in White Plains who acts as the broker for such jobs. Keller travels a lot, usually at a moment’s notice, and kills people, but he makes a decent living, so he’s fine with it.
This is a bit different than I was expecting. Yes, Keller is an assassin. But he’s so damn likeable it’s hard to root against him. This is also a series of short stories which I didn’t realize when I bought it. It’s all good though. Each story is self-contained in the life of John Keller. Various jobs, how he went about them, and what he does in-between. There’s interaction with the Old Man from White Plains and his assistant Dot. He even starts seeing a psychiatrist. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Keller is a fascinating character, his jobs are varied, and the whole thing is just so interesting. I hate to say that a book about an assassin is an enjoyable read, but it is. It really is. I also had no idea that there are more Keller books. I’m going to be putting those on Planet TBR for future entertainment.

John Charming isn't your average prince... He comes from a line of Charmings - an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chain mail and crossbows to Kevlar and shotguns, John Charming was one of the best-until a curse made him one of the abominations the Knights were sworn to hunt.

John Charming is an unassuming bartender in Virginia trying to lead a quiet life and stay under the supernatural radar. Because he’s something special in their world, but liked by none. Hunted by the Knights Templar (or current version thereof) and disliked by the typical supes (maybe because he kills them - who knows?), he’s just trying to live his life. But then a super hot blonde (Sig) walks into his bar with a vampire soon following. John figures it’s time to move on. Again. Except this time, he’s pulled into Sig’s world and has to decide - stay or go?
The fast pace, mystery to solve, danger, sarcastic humor, and supernatural all put me in mind of Harry Dresden (The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher). If you like your stories to have those ingredients then dig in. It’s a tasty treat. It’s different enough to be fresh, too. The world building is great, the characters are terrific, the mystery satisfying, and the villain makes me want to chop a body into a million tiny pieces. Probably with a wood chipper. There’s plenty of plot here and no boredom in sight.
I finally had a chance to listen to this on my drive home to North Carolina from my mom’s farm in Ohio. Listening at 1.5x was just about perfect. I finished right before I pulled into my driveway. I’m looking forward to picking up book 2 because it was so easy to fall into this world and let the hours fly by.

John Bartley lives with his aunt and uncle in Greendale, Vermont. The year? 1875. He helps with the mill, goes to dances, and has friends. Then one day he hears a noise coming from the woods. When he investigates, everything changes. Literally. Ending up in 2009 is very confusing, but when he meets Tess McKinnon she helps him figure things out. Once she’s convinced he’s not crazy or pulling an elaborate joke, that is. When John discovers that his home was wiped out he has to go back. Things get even more complicated and, well, it’s a mess for sure. Now what do they do?
Oh, man. Time travel. Can you imagine just going along, minding your own business and then, all of a sudden, you’re 144 yrs in the future? I mean, wtf? You’d probably think you’d gone crazy. Or had a stroke. Or something. John holds it together pretty well and Tess is a smart girl. When she finally wraps her head around the fact this guy is telling the truth she jumps all in. They do research and when a field trip to where John’s home should be turns up ruins, he knows he has to find a way back. Then there’s Tess and that ending? Holy shit. This is a great story and while it ends on a cliffhanger at least the 2nd book is out and ready to go.

Octavia Hollows can bring people back from the dead with a touch of her hand and a funky green light show. She and her pet pig Bacon have been traveling around the country on her motorcycle ever since she lost the love of her life. The pain nearly cripples her, but she’s determined to find out what happened to Elba. She’s being stalked by someone sinister and while she does get some help from friends along the way, will they be enough?
I really love this story and the narrator. Octavia is a great character! Full of pain and doubt she really has room to learn and grow through the book and the best part? She does! Her journey is our journey. The writing is not overly complex allowing it to flow along at a consistent pace and the characters are wonderful. There really wasn’t much I didn’t like about this story. The villain is a little underwhelming, but overall I have very much enjoyed listening to this audiobook. It is no fault of the book that it took me so long to finish it. That’s all on me and my crazy life.

Charlie Asher, normal guy, is about to have his life turned upside down with the birth of his first child, Sophie. Things start going sideways before he can even get his kid home from the hospital. After that, poor normal and very Beta Male, Charlie has things to deal with that no one should. And then it gets weirder.
This is great read, or listen, in my case since I have the audiobook. It’s supernatural, and it’s spooky, and altogether kooky…wait. That’s not, I mean, yes it is, but, ok, it’s not the Adams Family. It’s definitely weird and humorous and creative. Very entertaining. The plot is okay. It’s probably the weakest part in my opinion. The world building is pretty good. I had no problem picturing it or keeping track of things. The characters are the best part. I love them all. I know it’s about Death, but if you’re looking for something a bit different that’s not all gloom and doom then this tale is worth your time.
