Historia
Kieran Elliott’s life changed forever on a single day when a reckless mistake led to devastating consequences. The guilt that still haunts him resurfaces during a visit with his young family to the small coastal town he once called home. Twelve years earlier the storm of the century claimed the lives of Kieran’s brother and his friend. There was also a third casualty that day. A teenage girl, last spotted on the sand as the weather rolled in, then never seen again. Kieran has barely arrived back in town after a long absence when a body is washed up on the nearby beach.

Disappointed
Revisado: 02-11-21
I've read and loved all of Harper's books ... except this one. Characters, setting and plot are thin.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Must read. So much that I never new about the struggle and those involved, especially about Boston University's (careless) role in the aftermath. Well told and hard to put down.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Historia
The life of Princess May of Teck is one of the great Cinderella stories in history. From a family of impoverished nobility, she was chosen by Queen Victoria as the bride for her eldest grandson, the scandalous Duke of Clarence, heir to the throne, who died mysteriously before their marriage. Despite this setback, she became queen, mother of two kings, grandmother of the current queen, and a lasting symbol of the majesty of the British throne.

Explains a lot about her kids
Revisado: 07-03-19
interesting and filled gap in my pre-Elizabeth Ii history. I was a bit bored by all the descriptions of grand clothing, mannerd and homes, but realized later on that it set a baseline for the incredible changes throughout th first half of the 20th century.
For all her strengths, her astounding inattention to the care provided to her children (especially later-to-be Kings David and Bertie) and her lack of maternal feeling explained a lot about the abdication and it's results.
Not a likeable character but a good book.

high level presentation that filled in the gaps for me. I had forgotten all about how obnoxious Charles was even pre Diana. Love the Queen's wicked humor of late.

Historia
French philosopher Jean Paul Sartre said that "words are loaded pistols". In the hands of Russ Baker, they are hydrogen bombs. On each and every page of his masterpiece, Family of Secrets, he explodes the myths and lies that powerful forces have perpetrated on the American consciousness. He digs beneath the surface in a form of journalistic archeology to reveal the hidden history of one of America's most powerful families, leaving no stone unturned.

I am no Bush fan, but even I couldn't handle all of the unsupported conclusions and inferences about EVERYBODY in this book ... no matter what their role or political persuasion. I couldn't make it past 1973.

Ties up big gaps in CIA story for me
Revisado: 04-08-19
Ties up big gaps in CIA story for me .. between WWII, Cold War espionage, the illegal "coups" and and domestic spying on US citizens in 60s and 70s. Not surprised to see our buddies Cheney and Rumsfeld show up before all was said and done. cant understand any of it without Angleton.
