Way better than the movie!
Revisado: 02-14-25
Michael Crichton once again shows how to look like an expert out of nowhere. As a Medievalist, I can tell he really did his research for this book. It is much more authentic than the movie, which doesn’t even take into account the language differences between today and then. The dialogue for the Medieval characters is also very believable, if perhaps a bit exaggerated at times. The only drawback of this audiobook is that the reader’s American accent can sound odd, even somewhat silly for the old dialogue, but overall he is excellent. Crichton does a great job setting up tense situations where you worry if the protagonists will survive. This has to be one of his best books.

Historia
Historians have only recently awakened to the importance of the family, the basic social unit throughout human history. This book traces the development of marriage and the family from the Middle Ages to the early modern era. It describes how the Roman and barbarian cultural streams merged under the influence of the Christian church to forge new concepts, customs, laws, and practices. Century by century, it follows the development—sometimes gradual, at other times revolutionary—of significant elements in the history of the family.

Fun narration for an interesting topic
Revisado: 05-31-24
This is an all encompassing work which details norms of family life from classical Rome to the renaissance. Obviously it can get overwhelming but it does a good job of organizing the information. I love how the narrator always reads primary source quotes with some dramatization, which both helps delineate the quotations from the text, and gives character to the people being referenced. Really great for having a pretty solid understanding of Medieval marriage and family relations, as well as where most of our modern versions originate.

Historia
At 01:23:40 on April 26th 1986, Alexander Akimov pressed the emergency shutdown button at Chernobyl's fourth nuclear reactor. It was an act that forced the permanent evacuation of a city, killed thousands, and crippled the Soviet Union. The event spawned decades of conflicting, exaggerated, and inaccurate stories.

The best comprehensive telling of the tragic Chernobyl story
Revisado: 05-22-24
The author has done a phenomenal job at telling both a detailed narrative about the history of the accident as well as a vivid personal account of his experience at the sight. He also explains the scientific information in an understandable way for those without knowledge of nuclear physics. He does not condemn nor alleviate blame on anyone, he does insert his opinions but they in no way are confused with concrete facts. One cannot help but tear up at the tragedy of those affected by the accident and the heroism of those who worked to contain it.

Historia
The struggle between Rome and Carthage in the Punic Wars was arguably the greatest and most desperate conflict of antiquity. The forces involved and the casualties suffered by both sides were far greater than in any wars fought before the modern era, while the eventual outcome had far-reaching consequences for the history of the Western World, namely the ascendancy of Rome. An epic of war and battle, this is also the story of famous generals and leaders: Hannibal, Fabius Maximus, Scipio Africanus, and his grandson Scipio Aemilianus, who would finally bring down the walls of Carthage.

Dense but Clear
Revisado: 07-27-23
This book is about as dense a look into the Punic Wars as you can get, going into the details of every major battle. But it is written very clearly and not dull. It is mostly military history though there’s some political and economic analysis. By the end of it you’ll know almost all there is to know about the war where Carthage was destroyed. I wish he would have gone into further detail about the sack of Carthage, but above all probably the best book on the subject.

Historia
Charlemagne, who was born around 747, was the first recognized emperor to rule from western Europe since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The expanded Frankish state that Charlemagne founded is called the Carolingian Empire. More than anyone else, it was the great Frankish ruler who provided the basis for the civilization which we today call “Western European” as opposed to the classical European civilization that had preceded it.

Best biography of Charlemagne in existence
Revisado: 08-05-21
I have never heard a more informative, entertaining, and even emotionally driven narrative as this. Winston’s work matches with Griffin’s unparalleled performance truly bring the character of Charles the Great and all his contemporaries to life. You don’t just come from this book feeling like you know a lot about Charlemagne, you feel like you know the man who was Charles, King of the Franks. The nuanced and educated presentation of the world in the eighth and ninth centuries is astounding. This is the only history book that I listened to and actually cried at the end, both times!

Good but not the best in the series
Revisado: 01-20-20
It’s still pretty good, the performance is excellent. But it’s a little slow and tedious, and is kinda just a necessary section you have to get through to get to the more exciting books. Still a decent story and it’s cool to see how Luke has matured so much.
