Historia
When I arrive unannounced at my husband's studio in need of a shoulder to cry on after hearing that my best student, Alex, has died, I see a pair of wineglasses drying by the sink, and my deepest fear is confirmed: my husband is having an affair. Most women would fall to their knees in tears and throw him out of the house - but I just can't bring myself to do it. Instead, I go home and cook a healthy dinner for our children, walk the dog, and unload the dishwasher without complaint. I need this marriage to work to protect a terrible secret of my own....

Listened to this while gardening; happy sunny days. However, I kept thinking it would get better and it never did. Narrator is just fine. But, the wording and ideas are so repetitive and unchallenging. I wish I could get my credit back!

Historia
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Believable story, drawn out a bit. I liked it and listened throughout an evening. Not enthralling. Not truly a page-turner or can not stop listening kind of story, but adequate. Good, not great.

Historia
Richard Papen had never been to New England before his 19th year. Then he arrived at Hampeden College and quickly became seduced by the sweet, dark rhythms of campus life—in particular by an elite group of five students, Greek scholars, worldly, self-assured, and at first glance, highly unapproachable. Yet as Richard was accepted and drawn into their inner circle, he learned a terrifying secret that bound them to one another...a secret about an incident in the woods in the dead of night where an ancient rite was brough to brutal life...and lead to a gruesome death.

The best novel in the last 20 years!
Revisado: 02-16-19
Dearest Donna Tartt, Should you read this, I say "THANK YOU!" for such a tour de force. I have not read a novel, nor hear By the wayd on Audible, such a lovely performance. Your novel is recommended in my AP classes; yet sadly underappreciated by those who are not really "AP" students. Whaaa.... Sniff, sniff, baby snowflakes who can't get symbolism, classical references, etc...Anyway, for any thinking being, this novel is masterful in its plotline, character development, and wow factor. I hope they never make this into a movie. Good God, NO! Heard it was being optioned and cringed. Let the best rest. One criticism of mine would only be the ending; I would not have explained Henry, etc. I'd have just ended on the Bunny thing and the fallout...PERIOD. No need to explain. It is what it WAS. Love you, Donna Tartt! You are a wonderful girl. By the way...lost my job over having this novel on my reading list.

Astonishing! Not for the slow-witted!
Revisado: 07-30-18
I am so frustrated at those who rate this tale so low and say it is "terrible"or "awful" or some such nonsense! Go to a romance novel or easy, breezy thriller...sorry, but this is a real thinking person's novel. If you are looking for an easy read/listen, then move along. Don't berate it. Find another genre.
A person should know their literary limitations and this is not a fun, light romance, regular King thriller, or easy beach read. However, should you challenge yourself to listen and read carefully with a very open mind, you will be justly rewarded. I will not give spoilers, but allow readers to enjoy a twist of a story! Thank you Ms. Pinborough.

I am a teacher of AP English Lit. & Composition and I found this novel abhorrent. Thew plot was alll over the place, the characters muddy, and a sad tale that this author got a publishing deal. Wow. I am truly sorry I spent my money on this trailing drivel.

Historia
Joe Gere said he died on the afternoon his 12-year-old daughter Brenda disappeared. It was left to Brenda's mother Elaine to sustain her stricken family, search for her missing child, and pressure the authorities for justice. From the first minutes of the investigation, suspicion fell on Michael Kay Green, a steroid-abusing "Mr. Universe" hopeful, but there was no proof of a crime, leaving police and prosecutors stymied. Tips and sightings poured in as lawmen and volunteers combed the Cascades forest.

Lots to decipher in this engaging, twisty tale!
Revisado: 06-04-18
Marwood's gift for well-developed characters shines again in this novel. A horror story, I'd say, written in a subtle vein. Real people always scare more than a fanged boogeyman... You will find some finely-drawn characters comical, distasteful, others will slowly reveal a lovely, honorable inner core. Narration was truly skilled and actually added to character development. The plot is intricate, yet easy to follow with flashbacks announced by alternating years. Loved the end! No spoilers here-I hope you'll enjoy every minute up to the end as I did.

Historia
On a fateful summer morning in 1986, two 11-year-old girls meet for the first time. By the end of the day, they will both be charged with murder. Twenty-five years later, journalist Kirsty Lindsay is reporting on a series of sickening attacks on young female tourists in a seaside vacation town when her investigation leads her to interview carnival cleaner Amber Gordon. For Kirsty and Amber, it's the first time they've seen each other since that dark day so many years ago.

Brilliant! A thinking persons novel. WOW!
Revisado: 05-30-18
More please, Alex Marwood! Brava! A tale that draws you in slowly, slyly...and then whacks you on the head with the main event in the story. It is revealed as slowly as the characters are developed...-finely drawn and very, even brutally, realistic. As a writing and English Language Arts teacher/professor, I am familiar with great story arcs. Marwood excels here. A masterful job of drawing us in, revealing each complicated step in the story with skill and precision. This is not a story for those who struggle with a time order of present day characters and former life flashbacks. Also,I was impressed that Marwood respects her readers enough to use wonderful, dark, juicy, heavy, delicious vocabulary and subject matter. The narrator was great. I noticed some readers/listeners were irked at the fact that there is no "tidy" little ending. This is life. Things don't end with a gift-wrapped box for you. The ending is exactly as it should be. A great, intellectual listen that demands your attention; not a breezy beach read. I can't give this novel higher praise and look forward to Marwood.

Historia
The 1970s were known for free love and experimentation. Few cared if you were gay, straight, bisexual or transgender. It was the era of "sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll". In the midst of all this appeared a woman who had turned the head of Al Capone, married into the famous Maybelline company, and possessed more than enough beauty, magnetism and allure to make men do most anything.

Interesting story of a man striving for greatness!
Revisado: 03-14-18
Dan King is constantly reinventing him in this novel. (He even changed his name to a more European version...kind of pretentious... He, like a masculine Scarlett O'Hara has relied greatly on the" kindness of others" -- usually rich older women. He struck me as a "walker" for these women, often lived, dined with their crystal, china daily with them, did their hair and makeup and brought his male boyfriends into their grand houses. He approached the women and proposed business ideas to them, always using their funding for his ideas. He was charming, for sure. Many of these seemingly lonely ladies took him in and enjoyed his witty repartee. An interesting story, but I felt he relied on others too much and never relied on his own merits, which were extraordinary.
Narrator pronounced so many words incorrectly that I wanted to scream. As a narrator, one should read the book first and then highlight any unknown words and look up their definitions and pronunciation. That was very lacking here
Otherwise, an interesting listen.
