Atmospheric, Smart, Slow

James Lee Burke is an outstanding writer, but the storytelling here feels unfocused and familiar. While the protagonist is interesting and genuinely flawed, the redneck villains don’t come with any depth or nuance. The love story with the sullen gorgeous activist ignites no chemistry. Her personality is petulant and tedious. Yet when Hack and his wife interact, something smolders under the surface. I yearned to see more of that relationship, so see them penetrate the impenetrable parts of each other. It’s a vastly more interesting relationship. For all her flaws, Hack’s wife makes his young girlfriend seem like window dressing, an adolescent YA romance that feels out of place here. Listening to this book made me yearn for the ability to skim. Not Burke’s best, but not bad.

A Very Scalzi Story

One of my favorite aspects of Scalzi’s writing is his world-building. He tosses the reader in to the deep-end without assaulting us with elaborate descriptions, elaborate histories, elaborate economic theories, and elaborate political and religious constructs — that bore all but the most detail-obsessed readers into a coma. Everything we need to know arises organically from the immediate story at hand. Constituent service is no different. We find ourselves in a veritable Mos Eisley of aliens living amongst humans, and it’s out bureaucratic hero’s job to address civic grievances. Rife with trademark humor and a fun cast of characters, CONSTITUENT SERVICE is well worth the read. Amber Benson captures Scalzi’s voice adeptly. But for all her abundant talent, it’s difficult not to long for Wil Wheaton when it comes to a John Scalzi yarn, female protagonist or not.

A Hard Whiff on a Fun Idea

An interesting idea flounders with passive characters, a meandering plot, and numerous and uncalled-for descriptions of urinating, vomiting, boobs and nipples. Adults screwing 14-year-olds, rapey scenes, etc distract from a conventional government vs psychic teens yarn. I’d chalk it up to the 70’s if it didn't feel like a vain attempt to pump some energy into a flat story with venal, unlikely characters. Farris wrote this at age 23, so I’ll likely check out some of his later work. Give this one a pass.

Muscular, Thoughtful Thriller

The Old Man grounds itself in the psychological reality of being on the run and explores how relationships might have to work. It’s also a lot of fun. Fast-paced and unpredictable. I didn’t want this one to end!

A Gory, Subversive Romp!

Bridgett Nelson’s DEAD INSIDE involves an outbreak in a hospital, ghastly body horror, and fresh, compelling characters to lead us through this cinematic, over the top yarn.. Highly recommended!
