Historia
Every Winter, the human population hibernates. Your name is Charlie Worthing, and it's your first season with the Winter Consuls, the committed but mildly unhinged group of misfits who are responsible for ensuring the hibernatory safe passage of the sleeping masses. You are investigating an outbreak of viral dreams which you dismiss as nonsense; nothing more than a quirky artifact borne of the sleeping mind. When the dreams start to kill people, it's unsettling. When you get the dreams, too, it's weird. When they start to come true, you begin to doubt your sanity.

Too Much and Too Cute by Half
Revisado: 05-07-25
There is a type of fiction that thrives on surprising the reader with impossible and humorous situations ('Welcome to Night Vale', 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court') and they do it with success because the humor - snappy, off the cuff and outrageous - is based on ideas we can all untangle quickly so as to not distract from the overall narrative. This book, however, turns out to be just fifteen hours (that feels more like fifty!) of random obscure references that are far too cute and smirking (and too numerous) to make a compelling story. And that is unfortunate, because the original idea - that the human species evolved to survive winter by hibernating - is a good one and the reason I bought the book. But that idea, though compelling, is is just flat out wasted here because instead of a plot and narrative, we get an overly long tangled stream of smirking quips which aren't stupid so much as they are unnecessary and just try too darn hard to be cute.

Historia
It’s the summer of 1994, and all Maeve Murray wants are good final exam results so she can earn her ticket out of the wee Northern Irish town she has grown up in during the Troubles—away from her crowded home, the silence and sadness surrounding her sister’s death, and most of all, away from the simmering violence of her divided community. And as a first step, Maeve’s taken a summer job in a local shirt factory working alongside Protestants with her best friends, kind, innocent Caroline Jackson and privileged and clever Aoife O’Neill.

Definitely NOT a Comedy
Revisado: 12-21-23
I got the impression this book was supposed to be entertaining. It is not. It is very much the opposite - depressing - unless you consider sexual harassment, abject poverty and just a general sense of hopelessness funny?

Historia
Caroline Wilton has no time for romance. She’s too busy running her family’s bar to even think about dating. She’s also one of Starfall Point’s resident witches, responsible for keeping the local ghost population in check. But even the most magical of witches can use a shoulder to lean on, which is what happens when Ben Hoult, the handsome doctor she never quite got over, walks back into her life. Ben is a single dad now, and as he and Caroline reconnect, they discover that they both have a knack for helping and protecting the people near and dear to them.

Pretty Blah Story with a Trigger Issue
Revisado: 12-21-23
The story itself is fairly innocuous, but I wanted to write this review to let folks know that there is a trigger issue. There is a LOT of reference to the death of a child and how it effects parents. Anyone with kids who would rather NOT contemplate that absolute tragedy during what is supposed to be a light read might want to skip this book, especially since it really isn't particularly good.

Historia
Nick Winters and Noel Carter have known each other their whole lives. After years of shared family holidays, working together on the Winters’ Christmas tree farm, and being each other's safe haven, they wouldn't dream of crossing the line from friends to something more.... But when Nick comes home for the holidays after serving overseas and finds that his long-term girlfriend has decided to get her stocking stuffed elsewhere, Noel is there to pick him up and show him that instead of a Blue Christmas he can still have a Wonderful Christmastime without his cheating ex.

Unlikable Characters. Way beyond stupid plot.
Revisado: 12-03-22
Complete waste of time. If this is a sample of the next generation of writers I'm out. It is almost silly to mention the logic flaws in a story this awful but how about a small town in Idaho?? where everyone knows everyone but the maternity ward is overflowing and there are births every night.

A whole lot of wandering about in the snow

Not as much of the good parts of the series. Most of the book is just following people wandering around the a snow storm.

Too many characters, to little character.
Revisado: 12-21-21
So many characters, and such complicated intrigue - but I couldn't keep the sketches of characters straight. I finished the book but I have no idea what happened and no interest in it either.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Historia
Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mother’s pink scarf. Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter he’s received and the disappearance of Jonas’s mother - and of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn....
