Historia
In the remote forests of Stillwater, Minnesota, you can scream for days and no one will hear you. So when the bodies of two 15-year-old girls are discovered frozen in the snow, Special Agent Nikki Hunt is sure the killer is local: Someone knew where to hide the girls and thought they would never be found. UGH .... I wanted to like it.
Revisado: 03-14-25
I wanted to like it ... I really did but the bad outweighed the good by a country mile.
The beginning had promise. I kept waiting for the plot and character development to improve but it just didn't.
To be honest, the the last 45 minutes was so painful to listen to. The way it was wrapped up at the end was not believable. The main character Nicole ... FBI agent ... did not behave as one would expect in many of the scenes especially toward the end.
The narrator was just okay. Overall, very disappointing ... would not recommend.

Historia
One weekend, while Andrew Mason was on a fishing trip, his wife, Brie, vanished without a trace. Most everyone assumed Andy had got away with murder—it’s always the husband, isn’t it?—but the police could never build a strong case against him. For a while, Andy hit rock bottom—he drank too much to numb the pain, was abandoned by all his friends save one, nearly lost his business, and became a pariah in the place he once called home.

Okay Listen
Revisado: 03-02-25
2/3 of the book I enjoyed for the most part .. 1/3 ... the way it was wrapped up ... not so much. It seemed rushed and completely unbelievable.
Also did not enjoy the interjection of the authors political ideas / beliefs. I did not sign up for that. If I wanted to hear political views I turn on the news or start a book specifically about politics.
The book isn't a total waste of time; admittedly, but the end is a stretch so if things like that both you maybe skip it.
Narrator was pretty good .. and honestly helped when the content was hard to listen to.

Let down
Revisado: 12-10-23
Listen to this book right after finishing the Midwife of Auchwitz (which I enjoyed).
This book was quite the let down. The two main characters (sisters: Olivia & Pippa) did not have very good character development in my opinion. Olivia (having been raised with the Jewish faith) seemed so willing to start living her life in an immortal way ... there never seemed to be any conscious "push back". That leads me to my biggest fail for the book ... there were multiple detailed sex scenes. I am an adult ... I know ..
but was not prepared for it as the first book was not like that. I do not feel these scenes added anything of value to the story.
I cannot recommend and will not be buying any of her other books ... which is a shame ... since i was looking forward to the subject matter.

Historia
In Nazi-occupied Poland, Sofia cannot look her father in the eye. Sofia’s mother, her papa’s cherished wife, is Jewish—how dare he work as a doctor for the SS? She cannot forgive him, even if the bargain was made to spare their lives. In the middle of the night, Isaac emerges from a packed train with hundreds of others. Beneath Auschwitz’s barbed wire, the SS decide prisoners’ fates on the spot—and Isaac is chosen to work. Every breath feels like it could be Isaac’s last, so when he sees a beautiful auburn-haired girl peering out of the farm window, it feels like a dream.

Me .. me .. me
Revisado: 12-10-23
The premise was very promising. Narrator was pretty good ... but the two lead female characters (Sofia & her Mother) were so selfish and so
just plain awful to the father that I found them incredibly hard to like.
I will not spoil it but the half baked schemes they come up with .. especially toward the end .. were totally unbelievable. Much of the story was just useless dialogue ... the epilogue did not even help with feeling good about the book. Frankly, I was glad to see it end.

Historia
John Wayne Cleaver is dangerous, and he knows it. He's obsessed with serial killers, but really doesn't want to become one. So for his own sake, and the safety of those around him, he lives by rigid rules he's written for himself, practicing normal life as if it were a private religion that could save him from damnation. Dead bodies are normal to John. They don't demand or expect the empathy he's unable to offer. Perhaps that's what gives him the objectivity to recognize that there's something different about the body the police have just found behind the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat - and to appreciate what that difference means.

Never have I liked and disliked a main character so much at the same time. The plot and premise were not what I expected but I do not feel it detracted at all from the listening pleasure. I would recommend.

Revisado: 05-10-22
Started with a bang but ended with a fizzle. I initially enjoyed the story very much but at approximately chapter 18 I was wandering where the plot went .. the story became very dull and the ending was anticlimactic and unsatisfying.
I was disappointed as a whole.

No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her - and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.
