Historia
The Shōbōgenzō is the recognized spiritual masterpiece by the 13th- century Japanese Sōtō Zen Master Eihei Dōgen. It is comprised of discourses that he gave to his disciples, in person or in writing, at various times between 1231 and his death 22 years later at age 53. These discourses cover a wide range of topics pertinent to those in monastic life, though often also relevant to those training in lay life.

Does not work as Audible Book
Revisado: 09-12-22
Story: 5 The Shobogenzo is a treasured classic
Perfomance: 5 The narrator has a nice voice and reads clearly. No one could have done a better job.
Overall 1 --- This book consists of both a translation of the classic text and in-depth commentary about choices made in translation and the interpretation of the text. The problem is that, instead of reading a coherent section of text and then giving the commentary, the text is interrupted by long commentary frequently --- mid-story and even mid-sentence. It is very laborious to try to reconstruct the original stories so that we can think about the commentary. I believe that, in a written format, this might actually be a wonderful companion text for someone studying the original, but it does not work as an audible book. If someone were already very familiar with the Shobogenzo, they might already know enough to overcome these obstacles and gain something by listening, but it might still be more desirable to have a format that allows one to easily go back and find interesting passages during later pondering or discussions.

Extraordinary things happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart. Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, living with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor.

Historia
A debut novel already praised as "unbearably poignant and beautifully told" (Eimear McBride), this captivating story follows - over the course of four seasons - a misfit man who adopts a misfit dog. It is springtime, and two outcasts - a man ignored, even shunned by his village, and the one-eyed dog he takes into his quiet, tightly shuttered life - find each other, by accident or fate, and forge an unlikely connection. As their friendship grows, their small seaside town suddenly takes note of them.

Strange
Revisado: 03-27-16
The author lives to say words three times and our narrator has a lovely full voice that makes it like poetry to hear these words repeated...a meditation taking you into the mood. The story was one I was happy to see told, about a man who adopts a rescue dog that was never breed or raised for life as a pet. It's heart rending story, and the language combined with the reader's voice made it rather beautiful. For the first 2/3s, I was really getting into it. Then, the story mutated with a sensationalistic plot twist and became unconvincing. There simply wasn't enough insight into the mind of the main character. Then, as suddenly, the book is over without real resolution. The loose ends are cleared in a way most unsatisfactory, like a child barely hiding something naughty before a parent walks in.

Zoe, who's trying to put her old life behind her, isn't so sure she wants to reopen her alchemical past... until the dead man on her porch leaves her no choice.

Thoroughly entertaining
Revisado: 11-12-15
I don't like mysteries or romances, but I can't wait for the next in this series. The characters were interesting and somewhat charming. A poor French gargoyle has to distract himself from deeper problems by trying to create gourmet meals in an unyielding vegan household. It was good enough to make me forget that it's a genre I usually don't care for.

Revisado: 10-14-15
This isn't a book that I will read again and again, but it is a captivating book full of love able characters and a little mystery, It's helped make a bad cold more bearable and I'm sorry to have reached the end. As always, in a Ruth Reichl book, there were plenty of chances to indulge my culinary fancies without consuming any calories ..... And a few new ideas I can't wait to try once I'm back in the kitchen.

Historia
In The Dorito Effect, Mark Schatzker shows us how our approach to the nation's number-one public health crisis has gotten it wrong. The epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are not tied to the overabundance of fat or carbs. Instead we have been led astray by the growing divide between flavor - the tastes we crave - and the underlying nutrition.

Thought Provoking
Revisado: 10-08-15
The idea that the same "palletizers" used to make live stock gain weight as fast as possible are common in processed human food rocked my world. Likewise, the notion that this is necessary because crops and live stock have been breed to maximize yield and appearance while flavor has been left out of the equation. It's a whole new piece of the epidemic obesity puzzle.

Revisado: 04-10-15
In world filed with formulaic genre novels, this work deserves to be called literature. Thoroughly entertaining. The author does such a beautiful job unfolding her story that I won't say a thing about it, lest I destroy the revelation. Thank you, Diane Setterfield.
