Miss Marple meets Oscar Wilde in this series of cosy mysteries set in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Bunburry. There is shock in the local high school when Alison Shaw, a young, dynamic chemistry teacher, goes into a coma after being struck by a falling smart board. But is it an unfortunate accident or something more sinister? When the headteacher asks amateur sleuth Alfie McAlister to investigate, Alfie enlists the help of Liz and Marge, his fellow members of the Bunburry Triangle.

Historia
Growing up in a deeply evangelical family in the Midwest in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Sarah McCammon was strictly taught to fear God, obey him, and not question the faith. Persistently worried that her gay grandfather would go to hell unless she could reach him, or that her Muslim friend would need to be converted, and that she, too, would go to hell if she did not believe fervently enough, McCammon was a rule-follower. But through it all, she was plagued by fears and deep questions as the belief system she'd been carefully taught clashed with her expanding understanding of the outside world.

Finally a book the helps me to understand how a group of supposedly religious people could profess Christian principles yet totally ignore them and twist things to fit their beliefs.

Medical thrillers are one of my favorite genre and this is one of the best I've read in recent years. Likeable characters and enough science to make it interesting and a roller coaster plot. Hope there are more to come.

Didn't expect much but WOW!
Revisado: 11-16-22
I got this book on a whim as my usual fare are British murder mysteries. Was I surprised as I was drawn deeper and deeper into its twists and turns and well drawn characters. Ended up binge listening with a few hours for sleep. Don't want to give anything away so I'll not discuss the plot but the marvelous peek behind the curtain into the plots and ploys of the lawyers involved in capital murder cases. Found it fascinating. The only thing I was not comfortable with was the bit of religion that appears but it is consistent with what I know of the Southern outlook and only my personal feelings. Great read!

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Historia
The works of J.R.R. Tolkien are quite possibly the most widely read pieces of literature written in the 20th century. But as Professor Michael Drout illuminates in this engaging course of lectures, Tolkien's writings are built upon a centuries-old literary tradition that developed in Europe and is quite uniquely Western in its outlook and style. Drout explores how that tradition still resonates with us to this day, even if many Modernist critics would argue otherwise. He begins the course with the allegory of a tower....

It's been awhile since I've read a historic fiction that took me to that time so effortlessly but also had a white knuckle plot that held me. Having been born in 1941 the war is still alive to me and this book just felt right. Recommend it highly.
