Beautiful descriptions but...
Revisado: 05-28-23
Her descriptions of Alaska are elegiac and magnificent, but the storyline is melodramatic and at times silly. No doubt the descriptions of people in the area at the time are factually based and historically true, but the mother and daughter in the story are unlikeable and histrionic. I found the narrator accentuated this.

Historia
His name was Feliks. He came to London to commit a murder that would change history. A master manipulator, he had many weapons at his command, but against him were ranged the whole of the English police, a brilliant and powerful lord, and the young Winston Churchill himself. These odds would have stopped any man in the world - except the man from St. Petersburg.

Terrible writing
Revisado: 01-22-22
This is ham fisted writing and a plot line that is plodding and obvious. It was such bad writing I couldn't keep listening to it, and I was sorry because I love the time period and historical references.

Historia
Originally published in 1878, Is He Popenjoy? is a delightful comic novel written late in the career of author Anthony Trollope. The plot revolves around the themes of property and inheritance, as the relatives of the Marquis of Brotherton question the legitimacy of a foreign-born heir to the family estate. Lord George Germain, as the younger brother of the marquis, can neither inherit the family title nor enjoy the income from the estate. He occupies the ancestral home, Manor Cross, only by grudging permission of his elder brother, who lives abroad.

Absolutely wonderful
Revisado: 04-14-21
I loved this. It’s serious and it’s playful. I’ve read most of Trollope and I think he is more perceptive of the feelings of women than any other author I’ve read.
The narrator does a magnificent job, though I did slow it down a hair.

Interesting story, hate the narration
Revisado: 03-13-21
I wanted so much to love this, as I loved Deacon King Kong, but the narrator yelled every sentence. It was like being continually slapped. I just couldn't take it for more than a couple of minutes at a time.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

When Pope Paul VII dies suddenly, Gabriel Allon is summoned to Rome by the Holy Father’s loyal private secretary, Archbishop Luigi Donati. A billion Catholic faithful have been told that the pope died of a heart attack. Donati, however, has two good reasons to suspect his master was murdered. The Swiss Guard who was standing watch outside the papal apartments the night of the pope’s death is missing. So, too, is the letter the Holy Father was writing during the final hours of his life. A letter that was addressed to Gabriel.

Historia
"The Irish R.M." refers to a series of books by the Anglo-Irish novelists Somerville and Ross. They are set in the turn-of-the-20th-century west of Ireland. The humor in the audiobook is greatly enhanced if the listener has a broad understanding of the history of Ireland's relationship with England, and how Ireland was governed, as well as the Irish country way of life. The show is, however, not political, although caricatures of Irish and British people are used for humorous purposes.

Total delight
Revisado: 07-27-20
This is a total delight. I recommend watching the video series also, on Amazon prime, as that gives additional color and dimensions to the story. This is such fun and it is beautifully read. The reader's voice brings each character to life and never gets in the way. Sometimes the Irish accent is a bit too thick to clearly understand, but that is ok as it is never a character essential to the storyline.

Magnificent.
Revisado: 02-10-20
Of all the books to which I've ever listened, going back pre-audible to CD's and tapes, Martin Jarvis is the most compelling reader. He is perfect and the voices he gives the characters makes them as alive as if you were overhearing them speak. It took me a bit of time to warm up to the Oliver Twist storyline, but Mr. Jarvis's kept me listening, and the story is filled with horror and sweetness. At times, Dickens rambles on in a way that reminds me of The Christmas Carol, but it's a lovely story and well worth one's time.

Revisado: 11-14-19
This has the dialogue of a bad TV show. Sentences may often be finished by the listener because so many are cliches, and the situations move from interesting to predictable. I continued listening for some hours, because parts of it are unexpected and creative. Before I was half way through, I quit. It wasn't enjoyable enough to compensate for the bad writing and the annoying voice of the reader.
The reader used much emotional emphasis on every sentence, and read in the voice of a child. Since the main character is a thirteen year old girl, it would be excusable if that style didn't continue through every character.

Sappy
Revisado: 11-10-19
This is so sentimentalized and sappy I couldn't finish it. Since it is fiction based on historical people, she could have used this freedom to develop complex and nuanced characters. Instead they are one-dimensional and very emotional (all the time.)
