Singer-songwriter. Trailblazer. Mastermind. The Beatles of her generation. From her genre-busting rise in country music as a teenager to the economic juggernaut that is the Eras Tour, Taylor Swift has blazed a path that is uniquely hers. But how exactly has she managed to scale her success—multiple times—while dominating an industry that cycles through artists and stars like fashion trends? How has she managed to make and remake herself time and again while remaining true to her artistic vision?

So boring
Revisado: 05-02-25
The story line was a market analysis of Taylor Swift’s music. It was trite and lacked the fun of Shoe Dog. Very personal and written like an essay for marketing 101.

The adventure and spirit quest
Revisado: 04-20-25
This book turned out to be a surprise. For the first part, I thought it was a chic book and almost quit listening. But as I went further into the book, it got more and more interesting. I put it somewhere between an adventure tale, and a spiritual journey. Terrific book.

Mikage is an orphan raised by her grandmother, who has passed away. Grieving, Mikage is taken in by her friend, Yoichi, and his mother (who is really his cross-dressing father), Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses, Yoshimoto spins a lovely, evocative tale with the kitchen and the comforts of home at its heart.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Liz, if you're reading this, I'm a friend of Faye, John, and Jordan from Colorado. Thanks for your bravery and truth. We're in scary times, and you speak the truth no matter the consequences. Your protection of our democracy and the constitution is a blessing to us all. I am a slightly left-of-center Democrat who voted for Reagan and Romney but no other Republican Presidential candidates. I am not a conservative Republican, but I'm forever grateful to you. BTW, what is a conservative Republican these days? Sad state of affairs. Thank you, Liz.

Historia
In this “well-written addition to the history of Congress” (Kirkus Reviews), Courage in The People’s House tells the “accessible and well-researched” (Booklist) stories of nine individuals who served in the US House of Representatives—the “People’s House”—during a span of over one hundred years, from the 1870s to the 1990s. From the first African American to serve in the House to immigrants elected at the dawn of the 20th century, all were trailblazers who made significant contributions to the country.

An intriguing look into Congressional Hero's
Revisado: 11-10-23
I recently listened to Joe Neguse's "Courage in the People's House" and was deeply impressed. This book stands out for its engaging biographical narratives, a solid understanding of historical contexts, and a compelling call for rational cooperation within the hallowed walls of Congress. What elevates this book even more are Neguse's insightful opening and closing remarks, which frame the stories with historical relevance to today’s acrimonious circumstances.
As an avid listener of approximately 40 books yearly, many of which are biographies of notable figures such as Lincoln, Musk, Romney, Clinton, and Obama, I found Neguse's book refreshingly unique. It deviates from the typical focus on well-known political figures, instead shining a light on unsung heroes of Congress, a theme rarely explored in the books I've encountered.
Initially, I expected the book to cover prominent personalities like Charlie Wilson, Nancy Pelosi, John Quincy Adams, Sam Rayburn, and Abraham Lincoln. However, Neguse pleasantly surprised me by highlighting nine lesser-known yet immensely impactful members, such as Shirley Chisholm and Adolph Sabath. Each chapter offers a concise yet illuminating glimpse into their contributions to American history, providing an engaging journey through the lives and legacies of these underrated figures.
In summary, "Courage in the People's House" is a standout read, offering a fresh perspective on the often-overlooked champions in Congress who have played pivotal roles in shaping our nation. Neguse's storytelling prowess and historical insights make this book a valuable and addition to the genre of political biographies.

Historia
Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.

Mitt, my new hero
Revisado: 11-03-23
As a lifelong Democrat and an influential fundraiser in Colorado, I have generally stood firmly by my party's candidates. However, there have been two exceptions where I've crossed party lines — Ronald Reagan and Mitt Romney. While I held President Obama in high regard, I believed Romney offered a stabilizing force against the racial backlash Obama faced and he understood fiscal responsibility along with dynamic leadership. In my view, had Romney been victorious in 2012, the political landscape today would be markedly different, with Donald Trump a mere historical footnote rather than a prominent political danger and disgrace.
When I began reading this book, I had a favorable impression of Mitt Romney, despite harboring some reservations regarding certain decisions he made in office. This book provides an insightful exploration of his perspectives, showcasing the depth of his convictions and his willingness to stand firmly by his principles — and, just as importantly, to recognize and challenge what he opposes.
As someone who does not share his Mormon faith, I was nonetheless touched by Romney's devoutness and the way it informs his life. His humility and commitment to family resonate as the hallmarks of a character to be emulated. This book has not only affirmed my appreciation for his integrity but has also left me feeling grateful and inspired.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Jesus, Abe Lincoln, and Issacson
Revisado: 09-23-23
A question was asked at a recent Jeffersonian dinner party: if you could have three people over for dinner, who would they be? I answered Jesus, Abe Lincoln, and Walter Isaacson. Why Isaacson? Because having dinner with him is like having dinner with Steve Jobs, Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci, and Jennifer Doudna. I listen to about 40 books annually, and Walter Isaacson is my favorite author. His new book on Elon Musk is enlightening and brilliantly written.
I recently bought a KIA EV6 GT Line car. I looked carefully at Tesla and didn't buy it because my perception of Musk was that he was a reactionary libertarian, and I had no interest in supporting his politics. After listening to Walter's book, I now understand what makes Elon the most crucial inventor and businessman of this generation. Yes, he is filled with demons, but he's making the world better. Thank you, Walter. I didn't think you could write a better book than The Code Breaker, but you outdid yourself.

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Revisado: 04-11-23
I thought I had read all the books I'd ever need to read about Lincoln. He's been my hero since I was 6, and I'm 73. Little did I expect that Meacham had anything to add about this historical hero. But Meacham has written an outstanding biography that adds depth to Lincoln's unusual religious life and outstanding character. Thank you Jon.
