Historia
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned. Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it. What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do? Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

Historia
It's fall 2007. A well-timed leak has revealed that the US government might have engaged in first contact. Cora Sabino is doing everything she can to avoid the whole mess, since the force driving the controversy is her whistleblower father. Even though Cora hasn't spoken to him in years, his celebrity has caught the attention of the press, the internet, the paparazzi, and the government - and with him in hiding, that attention is on her. She neither knows nor cares whether her father's leaks are a hoax and wants nothing to do with him.

good first book
Revisado: 09-15-20
I have enjoyed Lindsay Ellis' youtube channel for years. Given her depth of knowledge on literary and film criticism, it was intriguing to see what she would write.
the story is an interesting concept. it does hit several sci-fi tropes squarely and turned some other on their head a bit.
While most sci-fi is focused on big battles and space opera, this took all that down to the micro to tell a love story of two alienated people.
the 12 yr old in me want more lasers and explosion, but the adult in me was pleased to see this story go a different route.
there are many twists and turns and the romantic plot points were spiced up with the political intrigue. one note. Secretary of Defense in a civilian they would not be in a uniform other than GI standard black suit, white shirt and red of blue tie for party affiliations.
there were points where the exposition slowed the action and I suspect a movie adaption of this would be nothing like the book. This did take me out of the story at points.
overall would eat the whole plate again and eagerly devour a second.

Historia
Nothing has changed more in the last few decades than our concept and perception of reality. The effects have manifested in our news, entertainment, and Google searches; we're finding that a lot of things we thought were objective aren't automatically so. Reality is not a concept we want to flush down the toilet with yesterday's food, though. However, we must begin to understand how it works in a world where profit is the driving force.

excellent compilation of thoughts
Revisado: 11-21-19
I have been a subscriber to Peter Coffin's YouTube channel for several years. Everything he talks about here he goes through on the channel as well.
It is nice to have it all in one place and understanding how all the thoughts string together.
I did have some trouble with it mainly because I already knew where it was going. So the build up and explanation of concept I was already familiar with from the YouTube channel was a little difficult to pay attention to. This is clearly a me problem.
That point is to say that if you are familiar already there is some more detail and elaboration. It is the broader scope that this book gives you. it's a fuller picture od the thought process behind "attention is currency in the market place of ideas". That makes it worth a listen.

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

an excellent extension
Revisado: 11-01-19
this was an excellent extension to the first.
the technique used was a bit confusing at first. However, a more attentive reader than myself would have caught it.
It is of interest to note the timing of the release. With the Hulu series in its second season, it was assumed this would be like expanding that story.
however, this harks back to the original book and only borrows a few elements from the Hulu series. example Aunt Lydia in the Hulu series is shown as a true believer in Gilead. She honestly believes in it and appears forthright and sincere in it.
Aunt lydia here is 180 degrees from that and better IMO.
Pick it up. worth a read or listen.

This is a YA romance with Paranormal addons
Revisado: 05-05-19
I was intrigued by this book because it focused on Navajo mythology. This is not something you see often. It also had a female lead. Both things made it stand out to me. So I bit.
A breakdown of the story I will leave to others. Here are just a few of the major annoyances that occurred.
The MC is talks to herself constantly. The story was muddled because you hear every single thought the protagonist has. Even in mid-conversation. At first this seemed slightly helpful with world building very quickly it became an annoyance.
The MC pines for a lost "lover". The trauma the MC experienced before the events of the book presents a perfectly reasonable explanation for why the MC is arguably depressed. This is not the issue.
The issue is that she never shuts up about it. See the above point.
The YA aspect feeds into this. When she meets, Boy 2, EVERY description of him is how "perfect", "chiseled", etc. Her internal monologue can't even describe at glance at his hand without at least five adjective describing his perfect long fingers. It's annoying when male author's do it to female characters, it is equally annoying here.
Then....the entire conclusion of the book is that the MC meets the lost love and has boy 2 and both are ready to kill each other and she has to decide. I had 25 minutes of the book left and the whole thing came down to a love triangle and how she anguishes over the decision. Because lost love freaking stabbed her and branded her as property and boy 2 used his clan power to convince her he loved her, AFTER ABOUT A WEEK of in universe time. An they are demanding she make a choice.
The seeming main plot of the story is presented as who is creating these monsters and where they are coming from. There are 4-5 chapters out of 36+ that actually deal with that. She spends over 90% of her time trying to decided if she is going to F--- boy 2 and his perfect body.
The point where the story was lost was when she met boy 2. After that, everything became about him. She "forgets" things. She gets distracted from the mission. She simple picks up the idiot ball and never puts it down.

Frighteningly good fun
Revisado: 03-27-19
This was, without a doubt, one of the best buys I have made all year.
The cosmic horror is real funny. The characters are deliciously phenomenal. Jokes orbit with aliens in a graceful dance that manages to never eclipse each other.
And the storyteller. Amazing. His ability to nail the characters shone beautifully.
You can't go wrong with this one.

another dystopian kids save the world
Revisado: 11-25-18
after about 6 chapters I realized the book was going in the same vein as the hunger games and divergent.
while the premise of it was unique, the story is the same old kids save the dystopian world that has run it's course.
