The anecdotes can be quite good, and there's some good advice in there. I was going to recommend it to a mother of an adult child with BPD, but then I kept listening and heard enough bad and inaccurate information that I can't recommend the book. I'd have to disclaim the inaccuracy of all of the stuff about false abuse accusations (far overblown and contributing to disconnecting BPD and trauma, which BPD is complex PTSD) to exonerate parents, overstating the prevalence of false abuse accusations, and encouraging BPD diagnosis in childhood (sometimes appropriate, but understandably not popular in the field). People with BPD often experience abuse and are much more vulnerable to it, particularly from Narcissists. It isn't uncommon to have a Narcissist partner abusing a BPD spouse, or a Narcissist partner and a BPD child. This book is clearly written for people without personality disorders who are connected to people with BPD, but it will inevitably be read by Narcissists and people with BPD who are pathologizing their children or partners, projecting, and engaging in smear campaigns (distortion campaigns, as she says). She doesn't seem to take abuse allegations seriously enough and belittles these, even while disclaiming herself to say that she isn't. The lack of adequate connection between BPD and trauma/abuse, especially in children, and the inappropriateness of diagnosing abused teens with BPD (happens a lot, such as with conservative parents pathologizing a gay child who understandably self-injures) is disqualifying for this book.

Historia
In early 2018, Larry Nassar, the former doctor for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University, was sentenced to serve out the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to a variety of sex crimes. New York Times best-selling author Mary Pilon and Carla Correa chronicle the scandal from its inception, tracking the institutions that Nassar hid behind, the athletic culture that he benefited from, and the women who eventually brought him to justice.

This is how you report on sexual violence
Revisado: 12-28-23
This is a aware example of spectacularly respectful, enlightening, responsible journalism on sexual violence. The story is so well-told, and it is quite the story. Sadly, I can attest (through my civil rights and Title IX work) that this ending of accountability is the exception, not the rule. Organizations that are supposed to enforce standards conspire not to in order to avoid liability from perpetrators at victims' expense. So many stars had to align, and people had to do the right thing, to finally bring him to justice. The investigator and judge in the end were wonderful and instrumental figures.
that being said, Nasser was first reported in the 90s? How many would have been saved if they believed victims and did the right thing then?
listen to and spread this reporting. you won't regret it.

Historia
In January 2019, culture writer Anne Helen Petersen set the internet on fire with her viral BuzzFeed essay diagnosing “millennial burnout” - a chronic state of stress and exhaustion that’s become a “base temperature” for young people today. Now, she continues this generation-defining conversation in a brand-new format, interviewing millennials around the country about their own deeply personal experiences with burnout, and the culture that creates it.

This includes some diverse perspectives, rendered in an entertaining and educational way. As a millennial, I think this is validating and important. Loved the generational focus.

Historia
Twenty-five years ago, when Pat Robertson and other televangelists first spoke of the United States being a Christian nation that would build a global Christian empire, it was hard to take such hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, such language no longer sounds like hyperbole but poses, instead, a very real threat to our freedoms and our way of life.

Prescient and explanatory
Revisado: 09-16-23
Listening to this in 2023 will no doubt feel a little eerie to anyone who knows about how things are now. It was weird reading the reviews that say this book exaggerates. Chris Hedges saw it coming, and gives us an inside glimpse into how this movement works with all of its propaganda, indoctrination, and profiteering. I've read other books about how the threat of Christian nationalism and white supremacy was considered minor not long ago, yet no one could say to remains the case.
One critique: This book includes a lot of full-text if speeches and interviews with the sort of demagogue who believe and propagate this kind of radical Fascist ideology. They are awful to listen to, but illustrative I guess. I'm not sure I needed quite so many in there. That being said, as this is an audio book, be careful listening out loud. I certainly didn't want my neighbors to think I believed any of the Fascist vitriol, pseudoscience, and proselytizing being read.

Historia
Donald Trump will be president again, whether he is on the ballot or not. That is because Trumpism is overtaking the Republican Party and will mount a vigorous comeback, potentially in the hands of a savvier successor. This prophecy will come true, according to Miles Taylor, if we do not learn the lessons of the recent past. With the 2024 election approaching, the formerly “Anonymous” official is back with bombshell revelations and a sobering national forecast. Taylor predicts what could happen inside “Trump 2.0,” the White House of a more competent and more formidable copycat.

Eyewitness confirmation and heroic warning
Revisado: 08-02-23
Trigger warnings first: If you're a whistleblower, this will hit home for you. Suicide and addiction. Migrant/refugee trauma with graphic dehumanization, especially of people from Latin America, by Trump detailed.
This is a very, very important read. I finished it in a day and half, and may be doing an article showing how the corruption and blatant lack of respect for rule of law has trickled down/is paralleled at local and state levels (where I urge everyone to uncover and fight similar tactics and erosions in rule of law). Trump dangerously inflicted his Narcissism upon the nation, poisoning institutions such that they would be accomodating of his whims and bend to his will. His lack of regard for intelligence secrets is an ongoing thread, as is lying and targeting anyone who objects to his anti-democratic, deadly, and sadistic plans. Miles Taylor and colleagues' extensive efforts to manage and reign him in were heroic, and bought us time, so I really hope we won't waste the second chance to save ourselves from autocracy.

Historia
Joe Mulhall knows what it’s like to stare fascism in the face. For a decade, often undercover at significant personal risk, he has investigated hate groups. He infiltrated a US white supremacist militia, set up a fake Ku Klux Klan branch, has been on countless street marches with violent far-right groups across Europe and got inside some of the most important ‘alt-right’ meetings ever held. Brazil, India and the US are still in thrall to authoritarian populism, and far-right views have become steadily normalised in mainstream politics.

The author's harrowing work is crucial, and everyone should understand his conclusions in our modern world which is being shaped by the far right/rising threats. This book paints a global picture, with clarifying analysis, and gives perspective of change over time. I don't think we can afford to consider anything in politics or current events without acknowledging what is presented here.
