Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are starting a family now that they’ve settled into their life here. As Casey nears the end of her pregnancy, she lets nothing, including her worried husband, stop her from investigating what happens in the forbidden forest outside the town of Haven’s Rock. My Favorite Series
Revisado: 04-24-25
I pretty much finished this book in one sitting. What a great use of a day off.
I've loved this series ever since City of the Lost, and while each book has its ups and downs, this one was one of my favorites. It really reminded me why I got so absorbed in the series in the first place. I can't wait to see what comes next!

Historia
When Star Wars burst on to the big screen in 1977, an unfailingly polite golden droid called C-3PO captured imaginations around the globe. But C-3PO wasn’t an amazing display of animatronics with a unique and unforgettable voice-over. Inside the metal costume was an actor named Anthony Daniels. In this deeply personal memoir, Anthony Daniels recounts his experiences of the epic cinematic adventure that has influenced pop culture for more than 40 years. For the very first time, he candidly describes his most intimate memories as the only actor to appear in every Star Wars film.

Overwhelmingly Meh
Revisado: 04-24-25
I really, really wanted to like this, but it was frankly just so boring. If you've watched really any behind the scenes material, this book won't glean any new insight into the world of Star Wars, and it certainly doesn't reveal much of anything about the author.
While there were some charming or amusing moments, I mostly just found myself not really caring. If it hadn't been narrated by the author, who did give it some charm and personality, I doubt I would have finished.

Padmé is adjusting to being a wartime senator during the Clone Wars. Her secret husband, Anakin Skwyalker, is off fighting the war, and excels at being a wartime Jedi. In contrast, when Padmé gets the opportunity to see the casualties on the war-torn front lines, she is horrified. Meanwhile, with Padmé on a secret mission, her handmaiden Sabé steps into the role of Senator Amidala, something no handmaiden has done for an extended period of time. While in the Senate, Sabé is equally horrified by the machinations that happen there.

A Disappointing Conclusion to the Trilogy
Revisado: 04-24-25
Well, I finished this series. I'm not sure I needed to, but I did. This book honestly just felt so scattered--there were too many plots and perspectives going on, but none of them really seemed to be going anywhere. I would have loved one coherent book about Padme, or even Sabe, but what we got instead was just kind of all over the place and didn't really add much of anything to the world of Star Wars.
I really, really hope someone else makes a go at Padme-centric novels, because she's one of my favorite characters, and this series was really just okay.

Historia
Escaping wrongful imprisonment wasn't something Connor had in mind, but being put into stasis aboard Earth's first interstellar colony ship was something he couldn't have prepared for. For 300,000 colonists, the new colony brings the promise of a fresh start...a second chance. Connor might be the wrong man for the colony, but he's the right man to see that it survives what's coming.

Decent, Fast-Paced Sci Fi
Revisado: 04-24-25
This book took me a while to get into (and it took me even longer to warm up to Connor as a main character), but once I did, I was hooked. It's not the fanciest, most complicated or intricate sci-fi the world has ever seen, but it's a solid, fast-paced, easy read. I picked up the second immediately after finishing the first.
Scott Aiello is a good narrator for this job. His range of voices is a bit meh, and the female voices especially are not great, but there's so few women in this one that it's fine. He may not have the range, but he does what he does well, and it works for this book.

Not as Good as the First
Revisado: 04-24-25
While I did get through this one in a day (I had off work and needed background noise for my day of rotting on the couch), I wasn't thrilled by it. The time skip and abrupt change of tone was really meh. I wanted to *see* the colony building and character development, not just be told it happened. The pacing was a lot slower than the first, and it didn't really pick up until the final third or so.
I'm still thinking I'll pick up the third since I have Audible for $0.99/month for a few months, but I don't know if I'm in this series for the long haul.

Historia
It’s Mallory Atkinson’s first Christmas in Scotland. Victorian Scotland, that is. Also, as the twenty-first-century detective learns, Christmas really isn’t a thing in Victorian Scotland. It’s all about Hogmanay. But her boss, Dr. Duncan Gray, treats her to an early gift of tickets to the event of the season: a Charles Dickens reading. There, they bump into Lady Inglis—the lovely widow who has sent Gray sexy letters trying to entice him back to her bed.

A Perfect Holiday Listen!
Revisado: 01-08-25
I just love Kelley Armstrong's novellas, and this one in particular was such a delight. It was perfectly seasonal, as I listened to the audiobook right after Christmas, and it was everything I could want from my favorite time-travelling, Victorian, mystery series.
The mystery itself was an interesting little case with just enough twists and turns that wrapped up nicely, and the characters it introduced were such a delight as well. I think that's what I loved the most about this one--just how much time we got to spend with Mallory and Gray, and Jack especially.
My only complaint (which isn't even really a complaint) is that the romantic tension is absolutely about to burst at this point. If these two don't get together in the next book, I may riot.
Huge thanks to the author for the free copy of the audiobook!

Historia
Mary may have inherited the brilliant mind of her late mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, but she lives a drab life above her father’s bookstore, waiting for an extraordinary idea that’ll inspire a work worthy of her parentage—and impress her rakishly handsome (and super-secret) beau, Percy Shelley. Ada Lovelace knows a thing or two about superstar parents, what with her dad being Lord Byron, the most famous poet on Earth. But her passions lie far beyond the arts—in mechanical engineering, to be exact.

Another great story from Hand, Ashton, and Meadows
Revisado: 01-08-25
I think a lot of the mediocre reviews of this book come from people who expected historical fiction rather than fantasy/comedy loosely inspired by history. I mean, really, the authors pretty much say in the opening that this is not going to be accurate to any historical record of these people. They specifically fudge the dates and make clear that the main characters never met in real life, so I really don't think it's fair to give this one a lower rating just because they play with the characters.
That being said, this was another 5/5 entry in this series. It was fun, funny, imaginative, and I loved the way it didn't *quite* follow the exact formula of some of its predecessors. The way they played with the themes of Frankenstein was really interesting. Mary and Ada were great protagonists, and I found myself really sucked into the story. Sure, there were some predictable twists, but it was a fun, and I had a good time reading it.
And the narrator? Impeccable. She truly knocked it out of the park, and it was a delight to listen to. She really brought the story to life.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did
Revisado: 11-13-24
While the premise of this book is absolutely excellent, I think the execution just falls short. It somehow felt weirdly rushed, but also like it went on forever. It could have ended easily 5 chapters earlier and been more satisfying.
The characters were on the flat side, and I don't think the narrators helped. I'd give her 3/5 and him 2/5, but I rounded down to 2 because his narration was so much slower than hers.

Historia
For modern-day detective Mallory Atkinson, being trapped in the body of a Victorian housemaid means overcoming endless obstacles. Her current challenge is winning over the suspicious young parlormaid, Alice. Mallory’s plan starts with teaching the girl to make Molotov cocktails, which is a perfectly valid science experiment and not at all a desperate ploy to gain Alice’s attention. Before the lesson can begin, though, Alice receives a letter that has her slipping off in the night. Concerned for her safety—and naturally curious—Mallory follows.

Huge thanks to the author for a free copy of the audiobook! It's always a good day when I get a Kelley Armstrong book for review :)
One of my favorite things about Kelley Armstrong is the way she just keeps gifting us with these awesome novellas. And seeing as I listened to the first two books in this series (and really enjoyed the narrator), I was hoping the novella would come out in that format soon.
What a fun little adventure! This was a quick story with a breakneck pace. The action starts on page one, and it really didn't stop. There were also some great little character moments, and I really enjoyed seeing another side of Alice and her backstory.
I'm so glad I got to read this right in time before I got my copy of the third book. This series is such a fun blend of historical fiction, mystery, and adventure, and I can't get enough.

Okay Book
Revisado: 07-08-24
I really wanted to like this, but I just couldn't.
I will preface by saying that I am definitely out of the target middle grade audience, but this book still lacked the depth of character that can make a kids/teen book great. It was just shallow, and the characters felt more like walking stereotypes than people.
The book did have its charms, and I can see it appealing to a kid that's more into science than reading, but even that part fell a bit short to me. I'm no eclipse expert, but even I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the truth stretching. If you're going to go *that* in-depth on the eclipse, at least make it right.
The narrators were kind of average as well. None were standouts in a bad or good way, but it drove me nuts how different their reading speeds were. Every time it switched, I had to adjust the speed.
Ultimately, I might rec this book to a middle schooler in my life, but not with all that much enthusiasm.
