Historia
At the end of the ninth century, a large part of what is now England was controlled by the Vikings. In the early 900s, Edward led a great fight against the Viking armies, assisted by the English rulers of Mercia: Lord Æthelred and his wife Æthelflæd, who was also Edward's sister. Known to history as the Lady of the Mercians, she earned a reputation as a capable general who was feared by her enemies. In this authoritative biography, Tim Clarkson tells her remarkable life story from childhood to her vital role in saving England from the Vikings.

Not a biography
Revisado: 02-04-23
This is not a true biography, spending at most one chapter on its nominal subject. The rest of the book is a history of England at the time of Aethelflaed; a relatively breezy and well written history but with essentially zero personal biographical details.

Historia
Almost a century after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Kaiser Wilhelm II is still viewed as either a warmonger or a madman, as the hundred-year-old propaganda posters remain fixed in the general consciousness. Was he, though, truly responsible for the catastrophe of the First World War, or was he in fact a convenient scapegoat, blamed for a conflict which he desperately tried to avoid?

A wild swing into conspiracy theories
Revisado: 04-24-22
This book starts out as an interesting, alternative take on the causes of World War 1 but gets progressively less believable until the final chapter blames the Freemasons and the Rothschilds for starting the war. There is certainly a case to be made that the Kaiser was unfairly given all the blame for the war but this is not that, this is conspiracy theorism and wild distortion. A terrible waste of my time and money.

Historia
Dubbed the "Dumb Ox" by his classmates for his shyness, Saint Thomas Aquinas proved to be possessed of the rarest brilliance, justifying the faith of his teacher, Albertus Magnus, and sparking a revolution in Christian thought. Chesterton's unsurpassed examination of Aquinas' thinking makes his philosophy accessible to listeners of any generation.

Not a biography, an academic treatise
Revisado: 07-01-21
This book is written in a conversational style that appears to be by an academic for other academics. There is scant biographical information about Thomas Aquinas, but endless discussion of his philosophy. It takes his religious "miracles" as literal truth and is therefore also suspect as history. If you are a religious person interested in theology this may be a book for you, if you are interested in biography or history this is not that book.

Historia
Beginning with the often violent circumstances of Dante's life, the book examines his successive works as testimony to the course of his passionate humanity: his lyric poetry through to the Vita nova as the great work of his first period; the Convivio, De vulgari eloquentia and the poems of his early years in exile; and the Monarchia and the Commedia as the product of his maturity.

A dense and impenetrable academic treatise
Revisado: 10-04-20
This book devoted 4 of its 24 hours to biography of Dante and the remaining 20 to an endless, repetitive, meaningless analysis of themes within his poetry. Those seeking a biography of a poet should look elsewhere.

Historia
1923: Faced with impending personal and political scandals (corrupt cabinet members, drinking, gambling, failing health made worse by a quack physician, blackmailers attempting to exploit his numerous affairs and bastard children, murders, and suicides), President Warren G. Harding embarks on a cross-country train trip, from Washington D.C. to Alaska, in an effort to rehabilitate his chances for re-election - something he is unsure he even wants. But the GOP have lost faith in Warren.

Garbage, not worth your time
Revisado: 07-08-19
A semi-fictionalized account of the life of a historical figure is something that can be done well, adding interest and filling gaps in narrative. This is not that. This is poorly written, poorly structured, with sophomoric humor that falls flat. It's like something a high school boy would write, with a high school boy's giggling discomfort with sexuality and lack of understanding of women. There is no coherent narrative, there are no examinations of motive or feelings, there is no broader historical context provided except in tedious "flashback" sequences wedged at random into the book. Truly, do not waste your money.

Historia
The similarities between the controversial elections of 1876 and 2000 have brought Rutherford B. Hayes back into public memory. In 1876, Hayes's opponent, Samuel Tilden, won the popular vote and led the Electoral College, but when the returns in some states were disputed, a special electoral commission handed the presidency to Hayes. Historian Hans L. Trefousse recounts the obstacles, triumphs, and real legacy of Hayes' presidency.

A dull biography of a dull man
Revisado: 03-12-19
This is a worthy of plodding biography of a dull man. The music between sections is very distracting and totally unnecessary but it's a thorough and detailed biography.
