Historia
Nerves of Steel is the captivating true story of Tammie Jo Shults’ remarkable life—from growing up the daughter of a humble rancher, to breaking through gender barriers as one of the Navy’s first female F/A-18 Hornet pilots, to safely landing the severely crippled Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 and helping save the lives of 148 people.

An interesting story
Revisado: 06-21-24
I enjoyed this book, particularly being read by the author. There was probably more detail from childhood than I preferred, but it wasn't bad.
overall it was a very compelling story of overcoming some massive hurdles and fighting misogyny in an era where it was much more challenging than today.

Historia
On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

A Page Turning Read
Revisado: 04-27-24
I have been aware of this book for years. I finally decided to download and give it a try. It is well written and well read. It tells the story of the tragic event in great detail and insight. I never got bored with the story or the characters.
It wasn't a mystery as this true crime has been told in the media many times. But never has the story been told with the depth of this book.
It's hard to say this was "enjoyable" so I usually say it was compelling.

Historia
"The tragedies keep coming. As we reel from the latest horror..." So begins a new epilogue, illustrating how Columbine became the template for nearly two decades of "spectacle murders". It is a false script, seized upon by a generation of new killers. In the wake of Newtown, Aurora, and Virginia Tech, the imperative to understand the crime that sparked this plague grows more urgent every year. What really happened April 20, 1999? The horror left an indelible stamp on the American psyche, but most of what we "know" is wrong.

A deep dive into the backstory of Columbine
Revisado: 04-27-24
I found so much about this book fascinating and compelling. It was written by Dave Cullen, who had intimate knowledge of the investigation following this horrific event.
This isn't an easy or light read, but it does the best at providing information on the backstory of the victims and the perpetrators. People who were in the school and many of the people who handled the investigation afterwards are interviewed.
Nothing will truly bring understanding to what happened April 20, 1999, but this leads readers closer than anything else I have read.

Blathering, rambling book
Revisado: 04-27-24
I was expecting an interesting look at history. Nope. This was at times rambling and overreaching. I found very little about these stories interesting. One thing it made me realize was that virtually every "accident" is related to a blunder. Sometimes very directly and often indirectly.

Historia
Beginning in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes. In New York City, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, officials watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to bring it down.

A compelling look at 911
Revisado: 04-27-24
This is not a light hearted book, but the depth of the storytelling is remarkable. This is told by people that were there. Or were directly involved. It is a painful look at the impact on the people who experienced this tragedy up close and personal.
I practically listened to this straight through. As the saying goes, I couldn't put it down.

Angry egomaniac story
Revisado: 11-10-23
I wish I hadn't listened to this. I actually previously had some sympathy for Perry. Not so much now. He is a lifetime "blamer" and "victim". He has been given so much throughout his life. Yes, he has had some difficult times but overall he lived a life of plenty. He managed to take all of that and create a living hell. He has had the means and opportunities to turn things around. Yet he has wasted all of those.
He is so bitter and angry at people who really didn't seem all that bad. Everyone has "stuff" that happens. You have choices about how you will deal with your "stuff".
Sadly, I'm not sure that I ever want to watch anything he's been in again. I'm sad about this. But I can't unhear his story and his anger. He is angry at everyone and everything and comes out making him sound like a real ass.
I'm sad for his loved ones that he has passed. But even this can't be a surprise to the people in his world. After this book it is obvious that he lived far longer than he should have, given his lifestyle and poor choices.
