I wrote off Dirk Cussler after his first two novels. They were abysmal. This one though? Decent. For me, the problem wasn’t the handling of Dirk or Giordino, or really Dirk jr and Summer, it was the fact that there wasn’t anything very compelling about the plot. A lot of action occurred, but the stakes felt low. The reader finds out the central mystery far too early and things play out very predictably. I got bored about a quarter of the way into the book and slogged through the rest. Not the worst Dirk Pitt novel. Dirk Cussler is slowly getting better!

Its exciting. I cared about some of the characters. The narration is good. The character development is… rough. The main character’s rage is decribed as going “super nova” throughout the series, which just feels silly.

The overall resolution of the series was… not great.

Plot devices that served book one’s purpose are conveniently ignored for the finale.

Not that you won’t have fun hearing about it all, but I hoped there was a stronger direction for tying up such a grandiose trilogy.

I loved how different this entry was from the previous books in the series. It shows us a whole new side of the Bobiverse to be explored. The ending left me with quite a few questions, but beside that it was a ton of fun.

I loved the premise, the cryogenics, the implications of such scientific advances, the problems therein. All fascinating, all thought provoking. Unfortunately, the characters did not feel as believable as the far fetched scifi premise! By and large the characters served the story well enough until the author tried to write a romance that just ended up feeling, at best, contrived, and at worse, forced.

Still though, the larger scifi plot kept me around until the end! Give it a try, see what you make of it!

Do you enjoy Indiana Jones? Tomb Raider? Nathan Drake? Please meet Dirk Pitt.

A real classic in the contemporary adventure literary genre, and one of the best Dirk Pitt novels ever written. Cussler really seemed to have fun writing this one and was at the top of his game. The plot is pretty solid, the treasure is fabulous, the characters have at least a little depth, and the heroes take a licking and keep on ticking… just like the orange doxa dive watch worn by the protagonist.

I will say after more than 15 years since I first read the book, it comes across a bit more sexist and vulgar than I remembered, but like Giordino says, “there isn’t a man alive that doesn’t mellow with age”, so maybe I’ve just mellowed a bit. Highly recommend, with a caution for the more sensitive ears that there are about 3 occasions you might rather just skip ahead thirty seconds or so.

It’s a rollicking good tale that kept me entertained THE WHOLE TIME. Scott Brick is fabulous as always and nearly matches the previously recorded voiceovers by Bruce Greenwood. And that’s saying A LOT.

I’ve read my share of pulpy thrillers and action novels, and this rose above the rest. It reminded me of the better parts of Tom Clancy’s novels. The premise is interesting, the characters are pretty intriguing if not quite fully developed. The action - well - it lacks a certain level of descriptiveness or emotional quality to really pull me in. Its not quite the same as listening to Blackhawk Down or Jurassic Park, there’s no visceral feeling to the writing. The danger feels distant. Even so, I very much enjoyed it, and appreciated that it was (relatively) clean for a political/spy thriller!

As this story covers eons of time, it can be a little difficult to track the new characters and new story arcs. I think I might need to find a cliff notes version to keep everything organized in my mind.

I’m pretty sure that this would be easier to follow in written form, but its still a solid scifi audiobook!

The premise is very interesting, and I’m looking forward to the other books in the series! Scott Brick is great, as always.

Its a very philosophical book, a bit sad, but sweet. I kept hoping for a bigger plot twist, a grander adventure, a sweeping change, but it was a bit pedestrian in that way. While the character grows and learns, the premise of the book seemed a bit underutilized by the main character.

Its not quite hard sci-fi, and it stays out of a lot of the interesting scientific implications of a few major plot points, but its pretty interesting overall. The characters are pretty good too, if not quite captivating. It feels like the early work of a very promising author, so I am hopeful for some of the other books and series Grumley has written!

If you want something pretty fun that you don’t need to think too hard about - and especially if you like a heavy dose of nautical themes, give this book a try! Scott Brick is fantastic, as always.

Growing up, I used to get the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce radioshows of Sherlock Holmes on cassette from the library. I’ve read every Sherlock Holmes story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I’ve watched the BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch. All this to say: this was a fantastic and interesting take on the classic characters as well as being a solid audio production. A++ story, A++ actors, with solid sound effects and audioscape, but not the best - it doesnt detract from the experience, but I have heard better sound work.

If you enjoy Sherlock Holmes and ever wanted more of Moriarty’s story, I highly recommend this podcast!
