Historia
The setting is a comedy club in a small Israeli town. An audience that has come expecting an evening of amusement instead sees a comedian falling apart onstage - an act of disintegration, a man crumbling, as a matter of choice, before their eyes. They could get up and leave or boo and whistle and drive him from the stage, if they were not so drawn to glimpse his personal hell.

Wrenching but disappointing
Revisado: 07-28-22
I found this to be a rather difficult book to listen to, for a number of reasons. The character is so deeply flawed and grating, I had to force myself to sit through the first few chapters before the story "opened up" and the deeper meanings came through. I found the narration really irritating - the characters' voices are unconvincing, and it's often impossible to distinguish between the 2 main characters, they are made to sound almost identical. Finally I thought the end was quite disappointing after the wrenching roller-coaster ride of the last few chapters.

Historia
Having done field work in New Guinea for more than 30 years, Jared Diamond presents the geographical and ecological factors that have shaped the modern world. From the viewpoint of an evolutionary biologist, he highlights the broadest movements both literal and conceptual on every continent since the Ice Age, and examines societal advances such as writing, religion, government, and technology.

Great book, dully narrated
Revisado: 07-12-20
This is a fascinating and illuminating work presenting compelling arguments on how the ascendance of the West was almost entirely a factor of geographical luck. In that way, it's a similar argument to the one Malcolm Gladwell makes in Outliers. The narration unfortunately makes this audio book rather tedious and textbook-like.

A harrowing tale, cuts close to the bone for those who have come through the transition in South Africa
