Historia
In Men Explain Things to Me, Rebecca Solnit takes on the conversations between men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don't. The ultimate problem, she shows in her comic, scathing essay, is female self-doubt and the silencing of women. Rebecca Solnit is the author of fourteen books about civil society, popular power, uprisings, art, environment, place, pleasure, politics, hope, and memory, most recently The Faraway Nearby, a book on empathy and storytelling.

The title is deceptive!
Revisado: 04-28-16
Would you try another book from Rebecca Solnit and/or Luci Christian Bell?
No.
Has Men Explain Things to Me turned you off from other books in this genre?
The title is deceptive. The first five minutes is spent on the title's topic...then, it hops around to rape, woman's rights, colonialism, gay marriage, art etc....
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I listen to most everything in1.25 or 1.5, so don't ask me!
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
You will not get too bored since the author jumps all over the place.

Historia
Nonny Frett understands the meanings of "rock" and "hard place" better than any woman ever born. She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy". She's got two men: her husband, who's easing out the back door; and her best friend, who's laying siege to her heart in her front yard. She has a job that holds her in the city, and she's addicted to a little girl who's stuck deep in the country.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Generally, I don't like fiction but this story had interesting characters, a bit of romantic interest ( I can't stand 'romances' either), a complex network of family ties and a few plot twists. Would appeal mostly to females.

Historia
Peking in 1937 is a heady mix of privilege and scandal, opulence and opium dens, rumors and superstition. The Japanese are encircling the city, and the discovery of Pamela Werner's body sends a shiver through already nervous Peking. Is it the work of a madman? One of the ruthless Japanese soldiers now surrounding the city? With the suspect list growing and clues sparse, two detectives - one British and one Chinese - race against the clock to solve the crime before the Japanese invade and Peking as they know it is gone forever.

Best true crime novel!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Set in last days of the pre-WW2, pre-Japanese invasion, it was indeed a very interesting time. Peking is on the verge of falling to the Japanese invaders, when the body of a young girl is found murdered and grossly mutilated.
I found this a very engaging book...far more interesting than fictional mysteries.

Historia
On May 13, 1945, 24 American servicemen and WACs boarded a transport plane for a sightseeing trip over “Shangri-La,” a beautiful and mysterious valley deep within the jungle-covered mountains of Dutch New Guinea. Unlike the peaceful Tibetan monks of James Hilton’s best-selling novel Lost Horizon, this Shangri-La was home to spear-carrying tribesmen, warriors rumored to be cannibals. But the pleasure tour became an unforgettable battle for survival when the plane crashed. Miraculously, three passengers pulled through.

An engaging story that proves the old saw "truth is stranger than fiction". A definite must listen for anyone with even a shred of interest in history. Has a Indiana Jones feel to it.

Historia
Hip-hop artist Tip "T.I." Harris has received every acclaim the music world has to offer. Now, working with bestselling celebrity collaborator David Ritz, T.I. applies all his talent and experience to the world of fiction by creating the epic love story of Power and Beauty. After the death of his mother, Charlotte, Paul “Power” Clay allows himself to be guided by Slim, a local businessman. Slim always has the best of everything, and Power is sure that if he learns Slim's ways, he'll make something of himself - and perhaps be worthy of Tanya “Beauty” Long.

The ending is a cliffhanger... to be continued. I didn't really like that aspect of it.
Also, both Power and Beauty both 16 at the start of the story, don't give you a sense that they are teenagers. They act like grown 40 year-olds without any teenage angst or 'tudes'. Entertaining but not real.

Interesting, realistic, enjoyable
Revisado: 08-05-12
It's not really a romance (thank god, I can't stand those silly things) or a chick lit book (no mention of Jimmy Choo shoes whatever those are). It's a good nonfiction with a decent storyline -for me not too complex, not too simple, not too many characters.
The main character shows some growth about how she deals with her troubled son. She finally evolves and learns to put herself first.
I also like books where I can learn interesting asides about places, events or things or that motivate to do new things. This read encouraged me to start cleaning out my closets!!
This story had two characters that I really could relate to-the son who was very much like my daughter (now deceased-rehab can do so much) and Marva who was very much like my mother except she (and fortunately not much of a hoarder) was an architect.
I really enjoyed this read except for the narrator. The narrator spoke in a slow, sexy, languid almost "porn' style" which almost puts you to sleep. I rarely have any complaints about narrators but this one really creates a mess.

Historia
Maddy Sprowls, newspaper librarian for the Hannawa Herald-Union, prefers to stay in the newspaper morgue and do her job. But one Saturday, she sees four elderly women get out of a taxicab at a garage sale. She figures that those women must hire that cabby every week to drive them from garage sale to garage sale, and wouldn't that make a great feature story for the paper? Shortly after the story runs, one of the four women, retired antiques dealer Violeta Bell, is murdered.
