perfect "lighter" break from my usual

I was looking for something a bit "lighter" than my usual romantic suspense, but not as "clean" as most cozy mysteries. This hit the spot for me. I am just disappointed that the second book of the series is not available in audiobook. I was ready to buy it immediately after finishing the first book.

I laughed. I swooned. I tried to puzzle out the suspense of "why" and "what next", though I guessed "who" was the bad guy early on. This is a comparatively light romantic suspense, both in terms of the suspense/violence and in regards to psychological baggage of the characters. I did not shed any tears. The two main characters are believable, which is a pleasant change of pace from most of the romantic suspense I read (which tend to include action movie like heroes and/or deep psychological baggage from traumatic events). I would also say the bedroom scenes are technically "open door" but not what I would call explicit. Narration was great! I wanted something less intense than most of the Susan Stoker books I had been re-listening to, but with some element of suspense. This hit the spot.

Great romantic suspense! Despite the fact that I am usually not a big fan of the accidental pregnancy/secret baby tropes, I loved this book and am looking forward to the rest of the series. It is a plus for me that the main characters are both over 30! If you are a fan of this author's Gemini Group Series, Anna Hackett's Norcross Security Series, or almost any Susan Stoker (especially Mountain Mercenaries), try this book!

The female lead never grew on me

I generally like flawed but relatable characters. However, for me, there is a difference between emotionally scarred and emotionally immature. This female lead seemed emotionally immature and irritated me. I liked the male lead and could understand his mistakes much more than I could accept the way the heroine treated him through much of the book. I also just didn't find the ending emotionally satisfying for a romance. He makes a beautiful pronouncement of love, and even after the epilogue I felt she never really gives him even half the affection he shows for her through the book.

DNF: did not like heroine

I was initially ambivalent about the heroine, had sympathy for her situation and her trying to do the best for her daughter, but felt she was a doormat when she should be strong and bitchy when she should be gracious. I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt because, I enjoyed several other books by this author. However, in chapter 5, her shallow fixation on her hair was the final straw. Wanting your hair to look nice is fine. Being that upset over her hair in that situation it just shallow and vain, two qualities I HATE in heroines. Also, by the fifth chapter I was not laughing the way I usually do with Pippa Grant books. So I stopped reading and listening in chapter 5

I really enjoyed this whole series and the way it addresses society's focus on image and fitting in to an expected stereotype, while still delivering great romantic comedy. I enjoyed all three books in the series, but this was my favorite. Plus size heroine and reforming ladies man. Quirky characters, but nothing too outrageous. The drama is all believable created from the characters' own mental baggage. All the characters are likeable and relatable.

Intensely emotional, inner conflict portrayed in A.L. Jackson's almost poetic style. I love the way this author makes me FEEL the characters inner turmoil. Just enough comic relief through the words and actions of an adorable child. I am looking forward to the rest of this series. It does remind me of her Redemption Hills series, which I generally loved.

The only "heroine" by this author that I HATE

For context, I generally love heroes and heroines who bend the rules for the greater good. I like chaotic good characters. I have listened to three other series by Anna Hackett multiple times, Norcross Security four times. I enjoyed the earlier books in the Team 52 series, and tried really hard to get through this one. However, by chapter seven I still hated the female lead. Throughout the six chapters I made it through, I just kept wanting her to rot in jail. Spoiler Warning: She was not blackmailed or tricked into her actions against the team, which included drugging one of them, who had done nothing to her! Even knowing who they are and what they s
do, she broke into their homes, drugged one of them, and betrayed the hero AFTER he saved her life! She didn't do these things for some greater good, but for money and pride. I gave up at chapter seven and skipped to the last chapter, which is basically a prologue for the next book. I still gave the story two stars because the writing quality is still good.
