Historia
From one of our sharpest political thinkers, a brilliant big-picture vision of how to bridge the bitter divides within diverse democracies. Never in history has a democracy succeeded in being both diverse and equal, treating different ethnic or religious groups fairly. And yet achieving that goal is now central to the democratic project.

Ehhh…
Revisado: 11-17-22
This book is ok, but falls into both sideism. The author even addresses the fallacy in the last chapter, yet does not discuss the important aspect of proportionality. Yes, criticize and point to the Left’s issues. They are there.
However, what the author does is take the huge camel size issues on the Right, and compare it too gnat sized complaints on the Left. There are issues that both sides have major faults, fallacies, and horrible ideas about, but this subject is not one of them. It feels like he is trying to find some flaw on the Left to look like he is being equitably to both sides.
It doesn’t work. A good example of straining a gnat and swallowing a camel though.
This is a centrist tome, and if you are all about both sideism and especially if you lean Leftward in that, you will find much to like here. If not, I would pass.

History of insanity

This is a good exploration of the insanity that has infected the GOP, and it’s long storied origins. Another important aspect of how we got where we are in 2022. Highly recommend

Now, demonstrating her majestic command of this story, Haberman reveals in full the depth of her understanding of the 45th president himself, and of what the Trump phenomenon means.

An excellent biography
Revisado: 10-17-22
This book gives the best…so far…overall story of Trump and his rise/fall from national power. If you want culmination of the other material out there with a healthy dose of original content, then this is the book for you. If you only read one book on Trump, this is a good one. The author is even handed and honest.

Historia
With Uncivil Agreement, Lilliana Mason looks at the growing social gulf across racial, religious, and cultural lines, which have recently come to divide neatly between the two major political parties. She argues that group identifications have changed the way we think and feel about ourselves and our opponents. Even when Democrats and Republicans can agree on policy outcomes, they tend to view one another with distrust and to work for party victory over all else.

Not bad, but maybe missing a causal relationship
Revisado: 09-02-22
The book is written and read well. I did find it odd that all of the studies referenced had both social group dynamics and competition. The social group dynamics were cited a causal, while the unifying competition seemed to be addressed as neutral, a survey method or contributing only when combined with group social dynamics.
Perhaps it is the competition more than group identity that is causing the negative reactions. Just a thought to consider as you listen to the book.
I would recommend giving it a read overall especially if you are not a policy based voter.

Good intro
Revisado: 08-08-22
As is the case with all of the Great Courses, this one is well performed, written and produced. It is a great intro the Stoicism and hits all the high points. I was able to quickly and effectively apply the principles to day to day life.

If you can relate…
Revisado: 07-15-22
Then this is an important book for those men who fit the starting position…are competitive, love “banter”, and are looking to recapture that footballer team spirit from their youth (traditionally masculine in other words). If that isn’t you…which IS me BTW…then there are still some good advice and ideas here. Just ignore the eye rolling talk about redeeming the aspects you don’t like.
The general principals relate to any one really, and I think it is worth a read or listen. I’m American, so I missed many of the cultural allusions…figured most out from context though…but that was part of the enjoyment of the book. Besides his accent is beyond cool.
Max…can I call him Max? I think so…is hilarious. I haven’t literally laughed out loud at a book this much in good long time. His humor is dry and a bit cutting…AKA why I love British humor so blasted much.
Can recommend if you are:
1. A traditionally masculine man looking to build deeper connections
2. A non-traditionally masculine man looking to do the same, and can ignore the more traditionally focused advice and stories
3. A woman trying to understand why in god’s name all her male partner’s friends are partners of her friends…or something along those lines.
Good job Max, and keep writing.

Originally published in 2014, this updated edition of The Revolt of the Public includes an extensive analysis of Donald Trump's improbable rise to the presidency and the electoral triumphs of Brexit and concludes with a speculative look forward, pondering whether the current elite class can bring about a reformation of the democratic process and whether new organizing principles, adapted to a digital world, can arise out of the present political turbulence.

Revisado: 04-28-22
This has good points and it is interesting to see the 2014 vs 2017 compare.
This comes from a conservative libertarian and anti-elite information silo and perspective. If that is your view, you will probably love it. Me, no so much.
I wouldn’t mind seeing another chapter post 2021 to see how he analyzes those events.
