Historia
Kathleen Hanna’s band Bikini Kill embodied the punk scene of the 90s, and today her personal yet feminist lyrics on anthems like “Rebel Girl” and “Double Dare Ya” are more powerful than ever. But where did this transformative voice come from? In Rebel Girl, Hanna’s raw and insightful new memoir, she takes us from her tumultuous childhood to her formative college years and her first shows. As Hanna makes clear, being in a punk “girl band” in those years was not a simple or safe prospect.

WOW!
Revisado: 09-14-24
WOW! What an amazing read! This was everything a good celebrity bio should be - quick, well-edited, funny, and thought-provoking. I was so entertained while listening to this, and I walked away feeling better than I had been going into this. Even if you're not a fan of Kathleen, this is still a great read! My friend, who didn't know who she was, listened to this in the car with me and also gave this a big thumbs up!

Historia
This work presents the first in-depth look at how this "girl next door" became one of Manson's "girls". It also tells about Karlene Faith's 30-year friendship with Leslie van Houten, whom she met while teaching in prison. To everyone who encountered Leslie - including prison staff and television journalists - she was not the demon typically portrayed by the media but rather a gentle, generous spirit who mourned her victims. But why didn't this intelligent young woman see the evil in the "messiah" who had sexually exploited her and ordered her to murder?

Revisado: 09-14-24
As someone who believed that Leslie should have been paroled years ago, I was excited to read this book finally. However, I don't think there's enough new ground or enough about her life in prison to make for an exciting read. I already knew about everything here from reading other books. What I found the most interesting were the times she talked about tutoring the girls immediately after they were sentenced. I wish she had spent more time explaining what they thought and said during class because her few examples are fascinating.

Historia
To this day, mention the name “Andy Warhol” to almost anyone and you’ll hear about his famous images of soup cans and Marilyn Monroe. But though Pop Art became synonymous with Warhol’s name and dominated the public’s image of him, his life and work are infinitely more complex and multifaceted than that. In Warhol, esteemed art critic Blake Gopnik takes on Andy Warhol in all his depth and dimensions.

I feel secure in saying that, after this, I'll never need to read another book on Warhol because this covered it all. I loved learning so much about such a complicated man, who many people had lots to say about over the years.

Historia
The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul-de-sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again. Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night.

This reminded me of a Goosebumps book for adults. It was pretty formulaic, and the concept seemed neater than the execution. This will be a good book if you need something super light, like for an airplane, or if you're doing chores - basically, anything where you don't need to concentrate on the plot.

Historia
David Wojnarowicz was an abused child, a teen runaway who barely finished high school, but he emerged as one of the most important voices of his generation. His circle of East Village artists moved into the national spotlight just as the AIDS plague began its devastating advance, and as right-wing culture warriors reared their heads. Fire in the Belly is the untold story of a polarizing figure at a pivotal moment in American culture - and one of the most highly acclaimed biographies of the year.

fantastic love letter
Revisado: 09-14-24
The author has written an incredibly detailed, deeply moving warts and all love letter to their friend. By the end of this book, I was in tears. I'm so happy I gave this one a chance - I'd never known anything about the artist before picking this up, but I was intrigued after reading the author's book on Candy Darling.
As many others have noted, the narrator seems to struggle with pronouncing things - to an embarrassing degree. She said Frida Kahlo's name like KAY-lo and pronounced "zines" (as in, underground pamplets made and handed out in the art scene) as ZAInes. How chronically uncool and under-educated about the subject you're narrating do you have to be to make such simple mistakes?

The Phantom Prince chronicles Elizabeth Kendall’s intimate relationship with Ted Bundy and its eventual unraveling. As much as has been written about Bundy, it’s remarkable to hear the perspective of people who shared their daily lives with him for years. This gripping account presents a remarkable examination of a charismatic personality that masked unimaginable darkness.

such a sad book
Revisado: 08-19-24
A really wonderful, if sad, book. She does a great job at building the early years of their relationship and the painful cycle many people find themselves in when trying to break away. I'd recommend this book not just to true crime fans, but to anyone who loves memoirs and books set in the 70s and 80s.

Since his death ten years ago, Lou Reed’s living presence has only grown. The great rock-poet presided over the marriage of Brill Building pop and the European avant-garde, and left American culture transfigured. In Lou Reed: The King of New York, Will Hermes offers the definitive narrative of Reed’s life and legacy, dramatizing his long, brilliant, and contentious dialogue with fans, critics, fellow artists, and assorted habitués of the demimonde.

Historia
In 1971, Go Ask Alice reinvented the young adult genre with a blistering portrayal of sex, psychosis, and teenage self-destruction. The supposed diary of a middle-class addict, Go Ask Alice terrified adults and cemented LSD's fearsome reputation, fueling support for the War on Drugs. Five million copies later, Go Ask Alice remains a divisive bestseller, outraging censors and earning new fans, all of them drawn by the book's mythic premise: A Real Diary, by Anonymous.

a story that needs to be told
Revisado: 08-19-24
People giving this low rating are cracking me up. It seems like an attitude that's both hyperbolic and prudish, but more importantly, it seems to completely sidestep the heart of this book, which is a story that should be told. I can understand nostalgia running deep, and I appreciate that the author took the time to acknowledge the positive impact this book had on so many lives. But families suffered real-world consequences for Sparks' charlatanism, and the fact that she could not claim ignorance of this is chilling.
That being said, I AM knocking this down a star because, hyperbolic ratings aside, I do agree that the book is too conversational at points - to the detriment of the writing. In the back half of the book, Emerson says he was once employed as a shock jock, and it shows. Other than that, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Very Good
Revisado: 05-23-24
Just a few thoughts.
1. This audiobook performance is great. It's a pleasure to have a competent narrator, and Shreiber has a wonderful grasp of the text.
2. This book is surprisingly funny! There were moments when I was laughing so hard I had to stop what I was listening to and repeat it to my partner. I also enjoyed how so much humor was woven around Patrick's character that he was utterly oblivious to.
3. While I've heard the criticism that there are too many descriptions of clothes, as someone who loves fashion and fashion history, I must admit I loved every minute detail of clothing and designers.
4. While the violent scenes were brutal, there weren't many. If you wanted, you could have skipped all of them and not lost anything in the story.
5. Ellis is a great writer, and this book made me want to listen to his other books. It's a testament to his skill that he wrote a character who does such awful things, yet I found myself cringing in sympathy with him so many times.

Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit. Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works.

So great!
Revisado: 08-30-19
At first I was disappointed when I saw how short this was, but after having finished it I can honestly say it was the perfect length. I’ve seen a lot of people comparing this book to We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and honestly? They’re not wrong. A lot of the same themes are present in both stories. But MStSK is a lot more deadpan and funny in its delivery. I had so much fun listening to this. My only regret is that I didn’t pick this one up sooner!
