Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Not a gripping mystery
Revisado: 07-20-18
Historical setting was weak. Characters were fun and BR did a fine job giving voice to them although she did seem to add a couple of decades to their ages.
This is suitable for folks who used to like to watch Murder, She Wrote.

Historia
When Inspector Peter Glebsky arrives at a remote ski chalet on vacation, the last thing he intends to do is get involved in any police work. He's there to ski, drink brandy, and loaf around in blissful solitude. But he hadn't counted on the other vacationers, an eccentric bunch, including a famous hypnotist, a physicist with a penchant for gymnastic feats, a sulky teenager of indeterminate gender, and the mysterious Mr. and Mrs. Moses.

Perfect

A perfect delivery of a whimsical and mysterious story.
The narration drew me in quickly and the setting was irresistible in 100 degree summer heat. Of course, if the story hadn’t been up to snuff neither of those things would have mattered, but it was. A bizarre tale with quirky characters: What’s not to love?

The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born.

Great beach read!
Revisado: 03-23-18
I didn’t have a beach but this book gave me a break from the daily grind.
The narration was excellent with good character variety. The story had a bit of predictability and the genre did too but it was fairly easy to over look. I love westerns and this book fit the bill for 17 enjoyable hours.

Author and narrator deliver great book!
Revisado: 12-31-17
The characters were fantastic. The setting for the story was so well done. Rap and the rap culture was a really interesting backdrop for the story. The writing and the narration brought me into the story completely. Loved it. The narrator is a real pleasure to listen to and helped bring the story to life...he was able to capture the voice in IQ’s head as well as voices on the street. The women’s voices were a little deep but not distractingly so.

Ben and Marian Rolfe are desperate to escape a stifling summer in their tiny Brooklyn apartment, so when they get the chance to rent a mansion in upstate New York for the entire summer for only $900, it's an offer that's too good to refuse. There's only one catch: behind a strange and intricately carved door in a distant wing of the house lives elderly Mrs. Allardyce, and the Rolfes will be responsible for preparing her meals. But Mrs. Allardyce never seems to emerge from her room, and it soon becomes clear that something weird and terrifying is happening in the house.

A "fun" horror story.
Revisado: 11-04-17
It was not frightening but gave a resolute foreboding. I am not keen on gorey stories full nail biting suspense and this book delivered. It sucked me in and guided me gently to the dreadful conclusion. It was very entertaining and didn't keep me awake or looking over my shoulder which is why I call it "fun."
The telling was excellent! The narrator was spot on with the pace, reverence, dialogue and characters.
Loved it.

You went to bed at home, just like every other night. You woke up in the back of a taxi, over 250 miles away. You have no idea how you got there and no memory of the last 10 hours. You have no phone, no money, just a suicide note in your coat pocket, in your own writing. You know you weren't planning to kill yourself. Your family and friends think you are lying. Someone knows exactly what happened to you. But they're not telling....

Beautiful
Revisado: 04-03-17
Caught between fighting for every inch and recounting what's been lost, the characters swim to life on the soft, heavy and rich prose of Jesmyn Ward's. She tells a hard story with beauty and grace that Cherise Boothe tells with respect and perfection. The telling gave so much to this story. It certainly added a thick layer of emotional buy in to the characters and the setting. Excellent.

Couldn't invest
Revisado: 02-14-17
Never felt the characters were fully developed so I really didn't give a hoot about them. The voice for Grace was far too harsh for a 49 yr old woman. It made her even less believable than the story already had.
