Funny, Sweet, and Appropriately Titled!
Revisado: 12-23-24
Definitely entertaining, and perfectly cast! The fact that the narrators are IRL friends might make this sort of friends-to-lovers story even better. As for the story itself, it’s sweet with a bit of angst (mostly due to miscommunication—even when the characters are ~trying~ to communicate, but just aren’t particularly good at it), and a good amount of humor.
As for the title, well…let’s just say it’s accurate. Jesse isn’t going to be winning many awards for his intelligence, even if he means well. The number of times I found myself literally muttering “oh my god” and “you sweet summer child” and “bless his heart” were…far from zero. Definitely felt for Murph, just waiting for the little hamster who runs the wheel in Jesse’s brain to finally power it up! Lots of “wait for it….THERE it is” moments. I’d say no one could possibly be as dense as Jesse, except I’ve known a handful of people who were EXACTLY this dense/oblivious throughout my life
Overall, a fairly light, sweet read/listen. Lighter and sillier than the book before it in the series, but with just as many feels

Historia
The very last thing U.S. Marshal Eoghan Sapphire wants is a new partnership. Worse yet, the transfer from Lexington, Kentucky is a civilian. That means it’ll be Eoghan’s responsibility to break him into the I.S.R. and the unique way their particular U.S. Marshals Service unit operates. He decides being a jerk to him and keeping him at arm’s length just might be the way to handle things…until he meets him.

Interesting start to a series
Revisado: 07-08-24
Interesting and entertaining! There’s a development towards the very end that surprises the hell out if the MCs and, while I had suspected for quite a while that ~something~ was going to be revealed within that situation, I definitely didn’t expect that specific thing!
The world-building was generally interesting, though there was a little bit of info-dumping at times from one of the MCs—but given the plot and the way the other MC is thrust into the world of the ISR, it’s logical for it to happen as such. The background we’re given as to some political happenings gave me a tiny bit of pause, as someone who has family currently living on a reservation in the US, but the supernatural is integrated into the “real world” happenings in a way that doesn’t seem totally out of place. All in all, this book seems to set up the series pretty solidly. And it made me miss living near Los Angeles a bit (but not the traffic) 😆
As a note to the narration, the second narrator’s voice doesn’t come in till the last chapter, but the reason is given in the author’s note, before the story begins. The main narrator has a very distinct (to me) cadence to his speech which was just the tiniest bit distracting at first, but I adjusted to it just fine as the story went on.

Kip’s accent almost made me put this down for good
Revisado: 05-21-23
The story itself was enjoyable. Lots of feels, tons of smut, plus ample hockey details that DIDN’T feel stilted or shoehorned in, so that was a definite plus.
But.
The narrator. Most of the narration’s okay. Not spectacular, but perfectly fine. EXCEPT, very unfortunately, in the case of the main character’s spoken lines/dialogue. It’s supposed to be a Brooklyn accent. I made 4 friends who would also have been in the market for a story like this listen to a 30-second clip of the first chapter. So that’s 5 of us, from 3 different countries—and not one of us could figure out WHAT sort of accent was happening here. Couldn’t even pin it down to which continent the accent was supposed to be from. I had to give this book six separate attempts before I could go more than a minute or so without cringing so hard I had to stop for a while. Very nearly requested a refund, which is something I’d never even considered being a possibility until this.
That said, I WAS eventually able to get over the voice issue, for the most part. It did get better. Not great, but ~mostly~ tolerable. Tolerable enough that I’ll likely buy the next book in the series, even though it’s done by the same narrator, because I ended up invested enough in the story/universe.
But overall? If you’re not confined to audiobooks as a medium…maybe read it in print instead of listening to it, if you have the option and are put off by odd character voice choices.
