I'm very hit-or-miss with middle grade books, and I can never tell which way I'm going to go. I loved this one, and I think it's partially because it's older middle grade, almost reaching into YA. But it's also because the characters are interesting, the story is well told, and it's effortlessly feminist. The narrator does a great job as well.

Richard Armitage is a skilled narrator, the characters feel solid and not cookie-cutter, the story is compelling, and the twist near the end had my jaw on the floor. I would love for this to be made into a TV series with Armitage as Jackman.

It's hard to say anything about it without spoiling anything, but I will say that I loved it, or at least most of it. I didn't like the ending. I think the whodunit should have remained a mystery. Also, I think Dan Stevens did a really good job in general, but I have no idea what he was going for with Judge Wargraves's voice. He sounded like a constipated turtle.

Michael Sheen Is Amazing

I'm not sure how I'd feel about this book if I'd read it instead of listening to the narration. I don't think I would have enjoyed it quite as much as HDM (which I read instead of listened to), but Sheen's narration is so incredible that I didn't want to stop listening. He'd never have time to do anything else, but it would be great if he could just narrate every book ever written.
