The narrator ruined an otherwise fine book.
Revisado: 08-09-24
Natalie Naudus sounds like a 70s Easy-Listening FM radio DJ. She would be perfect for "Fried Green Tomatoes" or even a "Barbie" book. But this is a Marvel Superhero novel. The only character she seems to enjoy performing is Sue Storm, and Natalie turned The Invisible Women into a shrill, nagging, fishwife. Feh.

Seemed to be a backdoor pilot for another series
Revisado: 08-09-22
Scot Harvath was hardly in the book at all. It seems to be a backdoor pilot to give Asha Pate her own series.
What is frustrating is that the book has a terrific idea for a thriller. China, tired of being humiliated by Scot, has decided to pick off employees of The Carlton Group one at a time - leading up to the humiliating death of Harvath. Terrific plot - sorry they did hardly anything at all with it.
Instead, Scot ran around India for some reason or another.
Feh.

Historia
Mark Twain is at his irreverent best with this hilarious parody of the 19th-century mystery. The tale begins with the murder of Flint Buckner and a heinous crime against a young woman. A man with special gifts - no less a personage than Sherlock Holmes! - enters the scene to solve the mystery and avenge the lady. He matches wits with an improbable villain, Archy Stillman, while Ham Sandwich and Wells Fargo look on, and almost gets himself lynched in the process.

Sherlock Holmes needs wolverine
Revisado: 05-29-21
OK the character wasn’t called wolverine. It was called hound boys. But the character did high mutant powers make no mistake. And Sherlock Holmes was Sherlock Holmes. I’m shocked this hasn’t been made into a major motion picture. It really should.

Historia
The best science fiction scrutinizes our culture and politics, examines the limits of the human condition, and zooms across galaxies at faster-than-light speeds, moving from the very near future to the far-flung worlds of tomorrow in the space of a single sentence. Neil Clarke has selected the short science fiction (and only science fiction) best representing the previous year's writing, showcasing the talent, variety, and awesome "sensawunda" that the genre has to offer.

Hit and Miss; Many more misses than hits

Dull and dreary
Revisado: 09-06-17
In the introduction, Meil Clarke mewed on and on about the difficulty in finding paying readers. But he never touches on the obvious reason for the problem.
The stories are dull. Page after page of tales from Women Studies Writing Seminars.
